Position Overview
The Underwriting Manager is responsible for managing teams of loan underwriters, leaders and pipeline.
- Facilitate an excellent working relationship with internal and external customers by developing and maintaining respect, communicating effectively, and providing excellent customer service.
- Maintain a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and trust.
- Effectively problem-solve using judgment based on knowledge of existing management policies and departmental practices and procedures.
- Meet established productivity, loan quality, and task management standards.
- Ensure confidentiality of client records.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the Company Culture.
- Respond to phone calls and emails within the same workday.
- Maintain 24/48 hour underwriting turn times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Managing a loan underwriting team of up to 25 employees.
- Managing staff performance and productivity.
- Developing Underwriter Supervisors.
- Managing staff overtime requests.
- Ensuring loans approved by the assigned team are salable and conform to applicable investor/agency guidelines.
- Ensuring the work quality of the assigned team adheres to company policy and procedures.
- Ensuring loans within the assigned pipeline close on time.
- Ensuring assigned company Key Risk Indicator (KRI) and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics are met.
- Reviewing and solving complex loan issues.
- Managing and resolving loan-level escalations.
- Attending and participating in daily pipeline calls/meetings.
- Assisting with recruiting and hiring of underwriting staff.
- Managing employee satisfaction and engagement.
- Managing external and internal customer satisfaction scores.
- Developing and cultivating great working relationships with sales, processing, underwriting, closing, secondary, and compliance teams and leaders.
- Developing and cultivating great working relationships with key home builder partners.
- Researching and responding promptly to internal Quality Assurance and Quality Control reviews.
- Assisting with new hire and process change training.
- Preparing and presenting reports to senior management
- Reporting material process and policy infractions/gaps to the Director of Operations.
- Underwriting Manager reports to the Director of Operations.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE
- Primary Underwriting Decision maker with 5 years of leading teams of loan underwriters.
- 10 years Loan origination underwriting experience, preferably in new build business.
- Excellent working knowledge of Non-Conforming, FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, and USDA guidelines. **Current FHA and VA Credit Designations are required**
- Deep knowledge of federal and state laws (e.g., TRID, TILA, ECOA, and HMDA).
- Sound technical skills with the aptitude to learn/navigate loan origination software and other technologies.
- Ability to write correspondence and effectively present information to employees and management.
- Ability to read and interpret various loan documents such as promissory notes, agency/investor directives, and other loan documents.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and provide information to resolve the situation.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
- Ability to apply basic math; calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages.
- Basic computer skills required: word processing, email, and mortgage software.
- 2-3 years of Ellie Mae Encompass Loan Origination System experience. Complete proficiency is required.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent certificate.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
