PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Community Engagement Manager isresponsible for the delivery of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s (KNF) education mission through the development and implementation of programs that engage visitors, families, students, community youth groups, and the public in a variety of venues that include our campus and maritime center, Fort Christina Park, school classrooms, and community centers as well as virtually through social media and other online platforms. The Community Engagement Manager improves the visitor experience, broadens the reach of our educational programs and activities, and enhances the reputation of KNF throughout Delaware and the Delaware Valley. The Manager delivers a major portion of our frontline field trip and classroom programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Attend or coordinate KNF representation at outreach events.
- Help deliver KNF school field trip programs on the KNF campus and the ship as well as lessons in the classroom, including our Starting a Colony program and Five Ways to Freedom: Delaware’s Underground Railroad lessons, in schools and community youth organizations throughout Delaware and the Delaware Valley.
- Manage KNF’s day-to-day operations and staffing of Fort Christina Park, implementing programs to increase public visitation and community use of Fort Christina Park while sustaining KNF’s partnership with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and the National Park Service.
- Manage and improve the visitor experience year-round day-to-day operation of the lobby of the Copeland Maritime Center, including staffing and training part-time and volunteer guides. Ensure smooth transitions between student groups, public visitors, event participants, and passengers sailing on the ship from our shipyard campus, Fort Christina Park visitors, and groups who may be visiting the Copeland Maritime Center. Collect, monitor, and report on customer feedback for continual improvement of programs and visitor experiences.
- Manage and take primary responsibility for KNF’s annual Wilmington’s Underground Railroad Day, LEGO Shipbuilding Day, Captain Kidd’s Pirate Day,and Halloween Ghost Ship events while also assisting with other existing public and community programs.
- Oversee the Outdoor Adventure Course including booking and running programs, training, and staffing part-time and volunteer educators, continuously improving the lesson plans.
- Coordinate the staffing and support for building rentals and ship charter events as needed.
- Oversee the operation of the lobby gift shop in conjunction with the office staff.
- Manage and help expand KNF’s participation with Heritage Tourism and adult tour groups, with emphasis on increased visitation and revenue.
- Help ensure adequate delivery capacity to achieve goals, including volunteer recruitment, training, retention, and recognition.
- Oversee the maintenance of education resources on the campus grounds and organize 1-2 volunteer groups for annual landscaping projects.
- Help promote programs through social media and other digital platforms to make better use of KNF’s Copeland Maritime Center, shipyard campus, and Fort Christina Park while reaching a broader and more diverse range of visitors.
- Enhance the reputation of KNF as a valued participant in the relevant scholarly communities.
- Responsible for the collection, tracking, analysis, and reporting of student and visitor data and visitor-based revenue across KNF’s many programs, including visitation to Fort Christina Park.
- Model and assure the exemplification of the KNF Code of Conduct and Child Safety Policy throughout the KNF education programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
· At least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in education/ a similar field.
· Teaching experience inside or outside of the classroom, with demonstrated enthusiasm and confidence.
· Self-starter, with strong problem-solving, project management, and organization skills.
· Managerial experience.
· Excellent communication skills with the ability to write.
· Flexible schedule including the ability to work on weekends.
· Facility with up-to-date software, including Microsoft’s Office Suite and Adobe Photoshop.
· Social Media experience.

Pay: $41,000 per year
