Examination Schedule:
Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five days prior to the examination.
Examinations:
Written Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of document preparation techniques; standard office procedures and equipment; filing techniques; research techniques; paralegal methods and practices.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written examination.
Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards
1. A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
OR
2. A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from an accredited postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses.
OR
3. A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of California for the preceding three years, and a written declaration from the attorney stating that the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.
OR
4. A High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent and three years of the same training, experience and verification as described in 3 above. Experience and training must have been completed by December 31, 2003.
Some positions may require possession and maintenance of a California Notary Public Commission.

- Applicants seeking to qualify under #1 and #2 must submit a certificate of completion of paralegal program/degree and verification that program was either ABA accredited or required at least 24 semester units in law related courses.
Applicants seeking to qualify under #3 must submit a copy of required degree and a written declaration from an attorney as provided in the Qualifications.
Applicants seeking to qualify under #4 must provide a written declaration from an attorney as provided in the Qualifications.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made at the County Counsel. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
