What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scientist - Protein Production and Purification position at Kodiak Sciences Inc.?
Kodiak Sciences Inc. is a fast-growing, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on transforming ophthalmology through innovative therapeutics. Our Antibody Biopolymer Conjugate Drug (ABCD) platform combines protein engineering, polymer chemistry, small molecule drug discovery, bioconjugation, and drug delivery to address high-prevalence ophthalmic diseases.
We are seeking a motivated and independent Protein Production Scientist to join our Discovery Medicine group as part of the Protein Engineering team. The team is responsible for designing, engineering, and characterizing antibodies and novel drug formats for retinal disease treatment. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving research efforts through protein production and purification. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge therapeutics development in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
Responsibilities:
- Perform transient transfection and protein expression in mammalian (e.g., HEK293, CHO) and bacterial systems.
- Develop and execute purification protocols for antibodies and other protein formats.
- Purify protein-polymer and protein-drug conjugates using established and novel methods.
- Analyze purified proteins using techniques such as SDS-PAGE, DLS, mass photometry, and isoelectric focusing (IEF).
- Maintain and troubleshoot mammalian cell culture systems.
- Coordinate resources to schedule protein production and purification.
- Document protein production processes, prepare reports, and communicate results effectively with the team.
- Maintain accurate and detailed notebook entries and protein inventory records.
- Perform general laboratory tasks independently to support project goals.
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related disciplines.
- 4 years of relevant experience in an academic or industry setting.
Required Skills
- Hands-on experience with transient transfection in mammalian systems (e.g., HEK293, CHO).
- Strong expertise in protein purification including column chromatography and batch-mode purification.
- Commitment to protein production and drive to explore novel, high-throughput purification methods.
- Proficiency in protein analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE and UV-Vis (e.g., Nanodrop).
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with AKTA FPLC systems.
- Hands-on expertise in antibody expression and purification workflows.
- Experience with antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) or protein-polymer conjugates.
Kodiak Sciences offers a collaborative, fast-paced environment where you can grow your career while contributing to transformative therapies in ophthalmology. We look forward to welcoming you to our team.
