Milieu Support (FT)

Job Summary:

Milieu Support Specialists are dynamic professionals who interact with youth in a trauma-informed and empathetic manner. They engage with youth to build rapport, develop relationships, and ensure safety for all. They are entrusted with responding to crisis situations, where they facilitate nonviolent intervention and de-escalation skills to regulate youth. Milieu Support Specialists are keenly aware of the impact that trauma has on a youth's behavior, emotions, and immediate needs. They regularly collaborate with staff and youth to proactively develop positive and impactful relationships.

Lad Lake Milieu Support Specialists serve as an extension of management to ensure all policies, procedures, and expectations are followed across the organization. This role will assist the living units in the daily supervision of residents, model appropriate caregiver behavior, provide support to other caregivers to optimize their professional growth and offer additional support for the security of the campus. Milieu Support Specialists work in concert with diverse professionals and caregivers to support the treatment plans of youth in our care. This role ensures caregivers complete proper paperwork before ending their shift, such as incident reports, missing persons' reports, and any other relevant documentation.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Effectively and appropriately model organization treatment philosophies, policies, and procedures.
2. Respond to all crises to mentor, guide, and develop TT/TS verbal de-escalation skills. Special attention is given to less experienced caregivers.
3. Ensure Trauma Informed Care strategies (including Collaborative Problem Solving & DBT) are understood and utilized by caregivers.
4. Provide coaching to caregivers when needed and follow up with feedback to respective Shift Managers and leadership so that caregivers can receive appropriate training/development.
5. Collaborate with Shift Managers to provide feedback for TT/TS for check-ins and assessments.
6. Monitor radio communication to know where assistance is needed.
7. Floating from unit to unit throughout the shift, the Milieu Support should physically observe all units on the campus. Unless on an approved break, the Milieu Support should actively engage with residents and caregivers at all times.
8. Ensure all policies and procedures are followed (correct violations immediately and facilitate appropriate reporting of breaches to proper supervisors or administration so that effective coaching can occur).
9. Develop therapeutic rapport with residents, be knowledgeable of their individual sensory needs, and mentor/coach TT/TS on how to put them into practice.
10. In the absence of the Assistant Director of Therapeutic Milieu, take direction and oversight from the Shift Managers.
11. Floating from unit to unit throughout the shift, the Milieu Support should physically observe all units on the campus. Unless on an approved break, the Milieu Support should actively engage with residents and caregivers at all times.
12. Provide active supervision of youth by engaging in activities that interest them. Be aware of residents' whereabouts at all times.
13. Engage in, assess, and document youth activities (shift logs, incident reports, behavioral management logs, databases, etc.).
14. Actively collaborate with Lad Lake treatment teams to achieve optimal outcomes. Be aware of each resident's unique and specialized treatment goals. Support our youth, their families, and community partners in healing and growth.
15. Maintain confidentiality within all written and verbal communications
16. Complete documentation accurately, timely, and completely. This includes all reports, progress reports, shift logs, databases, unit notes, and other unit documents.
17. Monitors the physical well-being of residents and utilizes available medical resources (according to established/documented procedures) when needed.
18. Communicate effectively with co-workers. This includes sharing information upon shift change, familiarizing yourself with and utilizing unit communication tools, attending team meetings, and providing verbal/written input.
19. Crisis intervention with youth through verbal de-escalation and approved physical intervention techniques when appropriate and necessary.
20. Knowledge and utilization of trauma-informed tools such as collaborative problem-solving, mindfulness drills, and DBT.

Qualifications and Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of experience in a residential care center.
• A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required for insurance.
