The Director of Infusion Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall management, direction, and leadership of the infusion nursing program. This includes being the subject matter expert (SME) on infusion therapy in the home and ambulatory infusion suite (AIS) setting. The DON ensures that the nursing team delivers high-quality care and adheres to clinical and regulatory standards while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development. This role focuses on developing training programs, maintaining regulatory compliance, and collaborating with pharmacy, intake, and clinical teams to ensure the highest standards of patient care are met. The DON may provide direct patient care, when necessary, but the primary focus is on leadership, management, and ensuring excellence in infusion nursing practice. Reporting to the VP of Pharmacy, the DON will work with pharmacy leadership to ensure nursing and pharmacy compliment each other in providing comprehensive home infusion care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Expertise & Leadership:
- Lead the infusion nursing team by establishing clinical protocols, policies, and procedures that adhere to the highest standards of home infusion care, including INS standards, OSHA guidelines, The Joint Commission standards, and state regulations.
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for all aspects of home infusion nursing, including patient care, medication administration, regulatory requirements, and clinical best practices.
- Act as a liaison between the nursing team and pharmacy staff, ensuring seamless collaboration and communication to optimize patient outcomes.
Training & Development:
- Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive training programs for new and existing nursing staff, ensuring clinical competency in infusion therapy and home care practices.
- Conduct regular assessments of nursing staff to validate competencies and address any gaps in knowledge or practice through ongoing education and mentorship.
- Provide guidance on the latest developments in infusion therapy and regulatory changes, keeping the team updated on current best practices and emerging technologies.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including state nurse practice acts, home health licensing requirements, and accreditation standards.
- Lead and prepare the team for audits and inspections by state boards and accrediting bodies, ensuring the nursing program meets or exceeds all regulatory requirements.
- Maintain licensure, certifications, and required continuing education for all nursing staff, including CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion) certifications.
Operational Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the home infusion nursing team, managing resources effectively to meet the organization's goals while ensuring optimal patient care delivery.
- Collaborate with intake, pharmacy, and administrative teams to coordinate patient care, manage patient schedules, and ensure timely and accurate documentation in the EMR.
- Monitor and report on key performance metrics related to nursing care, quality assurance, and patient satisfaction.
Quality Assurance & Improvement:
- Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives by participating in and leading the organization’s quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) program.
- Review clinical outcomes and patient feedback, implementing changes to enhance the patient experience and improve the quality of care provided by the nursing team.
- Regularly review nursing documentation, visit notes, and lab results, ensuring all information is accurate, complete, and timely.
Patient Care:
- Provide infusion therapy, assessments, and patient/caregiver education on an as-needed basis, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and patient care standards.
- When necessary, perform home visits and serve as a clinical resource for complex cases, providing hands-on expertise to resolve patient care challenges.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Act as a central figure in communication between nursing staff, pharmacy personnel, intake, and other departments to ensure integrated, patient-centered care.
- Support the sales team by attending meetings with referral sources, offering education on clinical capabilities, and promoting the organization’s nursing services.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems and other relevant healthcare technology platforms (e.g., Office 365, Citus, CareTend).
- Ability to work effectively with third-party referral platforms as needed (e.g., Allscripts, Navihealth, EPIC).
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a reliable form of transportation.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing in all states where services are provided.
- CRNI certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in home infusion or IV therapy, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.

- Direct supervision of all infusion nursing staff, including performance management, development, and day-to-day operations.

KEY FUNCTIONS
- 40%: Providing leadership, training, and development for home infusion nursing staff, including overseeing clinical practices, ensuring regulatory compliance, and serving as a subject matter expert on infusion therapy and home health care.
- 25%: Managing administrative tasks, including developing and updating policies and procedures, ensuring documentation accuracy, maintaining regulatory compliance, and preparing for audits and inspections.
- 20%: Collaborating with the pharmacy, intake, and administrative teams to coordinate patient care, manage schedules, and ensure effective communication across departments.
- 10%: Visiting patients’ homes or healthcare facilities as necessary to provide clinical expertise, perform assessments, or address complex cases.
- 5%: Performing other duties as assigned by management.
