What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Professor of Coastal Geotechnics and Geotechnical Engineering position at Louisiana State University?
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University invites applications for a tenure-track Coastal Geotechnics and Geotechnical Engineering faculty position at the assistant professor level. The start date for this appointment is anticipated to be Fall of 2025.
Responsibilities:
50% - Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses; developing and sustaining an independent, extramurally sponsored, research program and other duties assigned;
50% - Providing service to the graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), the College of Engineering, and LSU.
LSU is designated as the Flagship University in the state of Louisiana, has a total enrollment of more than 35,000 students, and is the only public university in the state to be designated a Carnegie Research I University. The LSU College of Engineering has experienced significant enrollment increases in recent years and is located in the 400,000-square-foot Patrick F. Taylor Hall that has recently received a $110 million renovation. LSU is located in Baton Rouge which has a metropolitan-area population of more than 850,000. The university's location, within one of the world's largest petrochemical corridors and in close proximity to the Mississippi River and its dynamic delta, provides significant opportunities for infrastructural, coastal, geotechnical, and environmental engineering research. Current strengths of the department include geotechnical engineering, coastal engineering, structures/infrastructures, mechanics of materials, traffic/transportation engineering, environmental engineering, and groundwater hydrology and hydraulics. Additional information about the department can be found at: https://www.lsu.edu/eng/cee/index.php. Questions about the hiring process can be directed at the search committee chair, Dr. Shengli Chen (shenglichen@lsu.edu).
Required Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field and have demonstrated a strong interest in research and scholarship in the area of geotechnical engineering and coastal geotechnics. In addition, applicants should possess the personal and professional qualities to achieve excellence in teaching (both basic courses and design courses in geotechnical engineering) and advising students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should have the necessary qualifications for professional registration and are expected to become registered professional engineers within the pre-tenure period of their appointment.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who have developed or have the potential to develop a sustainable research program focusing on one or more of the following areas: coastal and offshore geotechnics, coastal resilience, geohazard assessment and mitigation, and coastal and marine infrastructure (e.g., levees, wind turbine foundations, pipelines), climate-driven coastal change and adaptation, with an emphasis on the coupled fluid-soil-structure monitoring and modelling in the coastal environment. The expertise of the new hire will complement the current research thrusts of the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering program, including theoretical and computational geomechanics, deep foundations, soil-structure interaction, bio-mediated and bio-inspired geotechnics, and energy geotechnics. Candidates with a strong experimental background in geotechnical engineering are also invited to apply.
Special Requirements: The application package should be submitted online as a single PDF file with the application materials organized as follows: (a) cover letter; (b) complete curriculum vitae; (c) names and contact details of at least three references; and (d) two statements (i) research interests and direction and (ii) statement on teaching interests and philosophy.
Original transcripts and three letters of recommendation addressed to Dr. George Z. Voyiadjis, Chair of CEE are required prior to hire. Please have the letters of recommendation emailed to: cegzv1@lsu.edu.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.
