Responsibilities/Job Description
Job Summary:
The Genetics Counselor position is responsible for providing genetic counseling services to patients and families of Fairview.
Job Expectations:
Coordinate Patient Activities:
- Manage patient activities for the genetics department/clinics.
- Ensure all pertinent preliminary data has been received and communicated to appropriate staff.
Triage Patients:
- Triage both referrals and follow-ups into appropriate clinics and services.
Counseling:
- Counsel patients and families seen at clinics.
- Obtain medical and family histories.
- Interpret genetic diagnoses.
- Assess and communicate genetic and medical risks.
- Provide continuous supportive counseling services.
Genetic Counseling Services:
- Offer genetic counseling services for families where molecular methods of diagnosis can provide carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis.
Educational Services:
- Develop and provide educational services to health professionals and community groups.
- Create educational materials regarding genetic diseases for health professionals and the lay public.
Cultural Competence:
- Demonstrate the ability to provide care or service, adjusting approaches to reflect the developmental level and cultural differences of the population served.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- Master’s Degree: A master’s degree in Genetic Counseling is required.
Experience:
- Experience: One to three years of experience in genetic counseling.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Board Certified or Board Eligible: Candidates must be Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics.
