What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bending Inspector position at Magnolia River?
Primary Function: The Bending Inspector will be responsible for visually examining and testing bent pipes during the manufacturing process to ensure they meet specified dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards, verifying proper bending techniques were used, and identifying any defects or inconsistencies that could compromise the integrity of the pipe system, often working in accordance with industry codes and regulations; they may also document findings and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend all construction, safety and tailgate, and project update meetings assigned by the Chief Inspector and address any project concerns
- Using Magnolia River’s project management software, create daily reports on all activities on the job site associated with the bending of the pipe. Reports must be grammatically correct.
- Conduct thorough visual inspections of bent pipes to check for surface imperfections, dents, cracks, or other damage
- Evaluate the quality of the bend, including the smoothness of the curve and the consistency of the bend angle
- Overall responsibility for awareness of the client’s expectations for project completion and project documentation. The documentation at a minimum includes:
- Contract Specifications
- Alignment Sheets
- Construction Drawings
- DOT 49 CFR 192
- Applicable State and Local Government Codes
- Safety Policies, Regulations
- Use measuring tools like calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify that the bend radius, wall thickness, and other critical dimensions of the pipe are within specified tolerances
- Verify calibration of instruments and document the results
- Verify and observe safety adherence throughout the day. Report all incidents, near misses and unsafe activities to the Chief Inspector verbally and follow established processes and procedures for providing written notification to other stakeholders.
- Verify the bending personnel have the OQ qualifications required by the client
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of pipe bending techniques, materials, and industry standards.
- Proficient in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and word-processing
- Excellent oral and written (including proper spelling and grammar) communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills to produce accurate project records during construction.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Ability to read construction prints, sketch as-built construction drawings and/or to use software for construction diagrams
- Ability to adhere to safety standards and take a proactive role in reducing risk
- Ability to meet project deadlines
- Ability to rapidly establish creditability and relationships with a broad range of individuals.
- Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- A minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in the natural gas industry
- A minimum of three (3) years' experience with pipe bending
- Needs experience with 16” or larger diameter pipe
- API 1169 is required
Additional:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain vehicle insurance as required
Physical Demands:
- Extensive travel required.
- Duties are performed primarily in an outdoor setting with exposure to changing weather conditions.
- Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature.
- Ambulatory across uneven surfaces of a construction excavation work zone, climb in and out of ditches using a ladder, frequently bending at knees and waist.
- Must be able to perform work in a very loud, active construction environment.
- The person in this position frequently communicates with co-workers and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
