Lateral Transfer POST Certified Deputy - A Colorado POST certified applicant or an individual who is currently POST certified in the state they reside with a minimum of one year of Patrol Operations experience. 

 

Colorado POST Certified Deputy - Unless the applicant meets the requirements of a POST Certified lateral position as listed above, all Colorado POST-certified deputies will begin their career in the Mesa County Detention Facility.  


Any individuals who do not meet the Lateral requirements or are not POST Certified, can apply for the Deputy Sheriff – Jail Ops position.


JOB SUMMARY:

Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.  

Operates a patrol vehicle patrolling county roads, areas, and businesses to deter criminal activity and promote public safety.  

Responds to dispatched calls or complaints to investigate reported incidents of criminal activity, accidents, and emergency calls.  

Arrests and/or detains suspected violators of the law. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved.   

Prepares a variety of reports, records, affidavits, and logs as required to maintain department incidents and activities.  

Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.

Transports individuals in custody.

Presents evidence and testimony in judicial settings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Approaches and detains persons; makes arrests; restrains and/or subdues persons when necessary to effect physical arrests; searches persons for physical, visual and auditory evidence, using hands, eyes, and ears. Utilizes necessary level of physical or deadly force when appropriate under law and procedure.

Demonstrates working knowledge of and compliance with all department policies, procedures and directives.

Controls personal emotional responses and acts appropriately under high levels of personal stress. Demonstrates sensitivity to feelings of others; listens with empathy towards others; and displays compassion to those in distress. Controls personal aggressive responses and acts in a manner designed to calm volatile persons.

Responds to calls for service.  Obtains appropriate information at the scene.  Determines whether it is a civil or criminal matter.  Evaluates information and determines priority of actions at scene. Searches person, places and things.  Protects the scene.  Identifies, collects, transports and preserves evidence and personal property.

Gathers information utilizing verbal and physical interview techniques.  Gives legal admonishments.  Takes verbal and written statements.  Takes photographs, measurements and prepares crime scene sketches.

Demonstrates working knowledge of laws, codes and legal procedures by:   accurately detecting crimes and violations and applying the appropriate statute to each; complying with legal requirements when making arrests, conducting searches and seizing evidence; and writing reports that include all necessary legal elements.

Applies reason and logic rapidly in a legally correct manner when under physical, emotional and intellectual stress.  Comprehends and processes new information quickly and accurately.   Retains relevant information.

Applies appropriate safety precautions in hazardous and potentially dangerous situations. Maintains a safe position when dealing with persons. Maintains awareness of own locations and that of others to include fellow officers.

Possesses and maintains ability to safely: utilize verbal and physical control techniques; physically maneuver over, under, and through physical obstacles, as well as drag items, run, jump, crawl and lift up to 100 pounds; qualify with a departmental approved handgun, shotgun and rifle; and drives sedans, vans, and 4 x 4 vehicles.

Explains procedures, laws, complaints and other information as required by verbal and written methods. Mediates disputes and provides a resource for the public for information concerning areas of human services commonly requested by the public.

Prepares written reports, memos, citations, activity logs, etc… This includes the documentation of own observations and actions; statements of victims, witnesses, and suspects. Writes legibly using acceptable grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Possesses and maintains ability to work rotating shifts. Participates in roll call and briefings.  Maintains awareness of assignment activities.  Maintains personal and departmental equipment in satisfactory condition.

Establishes and maintains effective relationships with peers, supervisors and the public.  Asserts self when necessary to confront or exert control over others.

Inspects vehicles.  Operates vehicles during routine and emergency operations under varying road, weather and lighting conditions. Performs minor maintenance when required.

Speaks English clearly and converses effectively with persons of divergent ethnic, cultural and educational backgrounds.  Projects voice clearly and forcefully when necessary while under personal stress.

Must have basic user-level competency with computer operating systems.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High School Graduation or Equivalent.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must possess a Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification or fulfill the requirements under Colorado P.O.S.T. to obtain/challenge Colorado P.O.S.T. certification upon hire within allotted time frame and must meet the Lateral transfer requirements as listed above.   

Must have or be eligible to obtain a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
 
This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, running, climbing, gripping, pushing, restraining, pulling, carrying, coordination, flexibility, agility, balance, physical power and lifting up to 100 pounds. Must be able to engage in physical struggles and restrain violent, disoriented, and/or mentally disabled persons. 
 
The rigors of this position place an unusual degree of mental, physical, and psychological demands on the officer.   Officer fitness is essential to officer capabilities and performance.  Confrontations with criminal suspects are unpredictable and cannot be entirely avoided; therefore, career-long requirements of physical fitness, (aerobic & anaerobic endurance, upper body strength and endurance, and core body strength and endurance) are an essential function of the job and required to perform arduous law enforcement duties.
 
May be subject to dangerous situations and/or individuals.   May be stressful due to the nature of personal contacts with inmates.
 
May be exposed to communicable diseases, infections, blood and bodily fluids.
 
The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold for long duration, outside atmospheric conditions, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods of time.  Occasional exposure to mud/rock/snow/slide conditions and flash flooding.
 
The employee is frequently exposed to loud noise, high speed and high volume road conditions and other traffic hazards.
 
Must be available for shift/weekend/holiday work and overtime.

Recruiting and Hiring Incentives
In an effort to attract the most qualified candidates, the following financial incentives may be used for individuals with specific experience, skills, or education:

  1. Fluent in both English and Spanish at the time of hire - $5,000.00 bonus (Effective 8/22/2018 – Will use Workforce Center test – Call Center Spanish-English Bilingual (Audio) Need 80% or higher to receive the bonus.
  2. Associates Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college - $3,000.00 bonus
  3. Bachelors Degree from accredited college - $5000,00 bonus
  4. Masters Degree from accredited college - $7000.00 bonus
  5. Active duty military service of 2 or more years - $4000.00 bonus
  6. 2-3 years of related work experience – applicant will be hired at Step 2 of the pay range as described in the Pay Plan Policy 1034.
  7. Three or more years of related work experience - applicant will be hired at Step 3 of the pay range as described in the Pay Plan Policy 1034.
Part-time Employees .5 FTE will be eligible for the incentives at 50% of the amount of bonus and paid in the same way full time employees receive them.
Only one bonus will be awarded per applicant; however, applicant may qualify for the step increase for experience and one bonus level. 
All bonuses will be paid in two parts:
  • 50% of bonus paid upon completion of the field-training program.
  • Remaining 50% paid upon completion of the first full year of employment. 
Current employees may also be awarded a one-time $500.00 bonus for recruiting an applicant upon the referred applicant's completion of the field-training program.  Pay period when cleared.  Paid from Division the person they recruited was hired for.
