What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineer position at MoMA?
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Engineer in its Building Operations Department with primary responsibility for ensuring that all Museum buildings are being managed and maintained in a safe and environmentally responsible manner and to the highest level of operational efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in department record keeping for information sharing, compliance, timekeeping, attendance, and other reporting.
- Performs preventative maintenance and unscheduled repairs of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, lighting, electrical, locking mechanisms, life safety systems, and general building maintenance.
- Operates machinery needed to perform duties as directed.
- Promotes sustainability by making adjustments to energy consuming systems and incorporating sustainable practices into assignments. Suggests, recommends, and implements approved improvements, alterations, upgrades, or replacement of equipment or systems integral with the buildings.
- Responds to and completes, in an acceptable time frame, all requests from the Building Operations office.
- Supervises and coordinates with contractors as directed.
- Performs administrative work as required, such as completion of work orders and maintenance of required databases.
- Conducts regular building inspections, ensuring building equipment meets scheduled and periodic maintenance requirements and contractor service levels are achieved.
- Carries out maintenance requirements on a scheduled or periodic basis, including but not limited to building maintenance, lamp replacement, electrical work, mechanical work, plumbing and other work as directed.
- Monitors environmental issues and provides field reports.
- Monitors and adjusts computerized control systems, such as BMS, Lighting and other related building automation and maintenance systems.
- Participates in training, including occupational health and safety programs.
- Remains current and up to date with new industry practices, legislative changes, and new technologies.
- Maintains all State and City licenses required for performing above duties.
- Conducts regular, thorough inspections of mechanical and electrical areas, reporting all serious deficiencies promptly.
- Adheres to all MoMA policies and procedures.
- Performs all job functions in a safe manner, abiding by and in accordance with all applicable Museum health, safety, and environmental policies, and government legislation/regulations.
- Maintains clean attire and a clean work area. Performs emergency repairs or actions to safeguard the equipment and building.
- Performs other relevant and related duties as assigned by management and the Chief Engineer.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (some college preferred) and three years related experience.
- Must hold valid NYC Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01) and Certificate of Fitness for Citywide Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems (S-12 and S-13).
- Experience in general building maintenance, including lighting, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
- Ability to monitor, respond, and react to all building conditions (leaks, smoke, other emergencies) and to operate BMS systems. Use of email is required.
- Experience and demonstrated ability and knowledge of how to use power tools, equipment, hydraulic lifts, interior/exterior ladders, computer workstations, and BMS system operation.
- Strong customer service skills are essential.
- Must be willing and able to regularly work in the Museum’s Manhattan and Queens locations as directed.
- Must be able to work the following days/shifts: Saturday and Sunday: 12am-8am at MoMA’s facility in Queens; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8am-4pm at MoMA’s midtown campus located at West 53rd and West 54th Street. Please note, work location/shifts are subject to change, with advance notice, based on operational or other needs.
- MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. If hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.
Reports to: Director, Building Operations
Salary: $56.00 per hour for a 40-hour work week
