Position Summary

The Dean is responsible for the administration of the business division which includes faculty and staff recruitment, development and evaluation, course and program development, review and evaluation, student advising, and division budgeting and budget control. The Dean organizes and implements the Business Division to provide learning opportunities for students within the areas of business, economics, computer information systems, accounting, graphic design, paralegal, and related fields. Additionally, the Dean oversees short-term, non-credit contract/customized training, occupational licensing, certification and professional development and continuing education programming delivered through the Offices of Workforce Development and Employee Services and Lifelong Learning by performing the following duties.

  • Provides leadership, supervision, guidance, and strategic direction for the Business division by planning, organizing, and administering divisional activities (scheduling of classes, meetings and other divisional duties).
  • Develops, with the VP of Instruction, the schedule of credit and non-credit classes for the division each semester and assigns faculty according to qualifications to provide course section schedules during the years.
  • Provides Vice President of Instruction (VPI) with current course outcome summaries for all Business Division courses and current curriculum guides for all division programming. Facilitates accurate submission of curriculum documents to the Curriculum Committee and VPI. Facilitates an accurate accounting of course outlines, class syllabi, and instructional materials per course and program.
  • Leads the growth and development of the Business division by recommending new and revised program areas to maintain credibility and relevancy of credit and non-credit courses and programs to ensure division offerings meet the needs of students, employers, and the community.
  • Keeps informed of new developments and maintains a creative and experimental attitude toward change, in order to improve continuously the operation of the division.
  • Provides oversight of the academic processes and events by coordinating the work of the division and its subcommittees, overseeing the review and approval of course curricular changes, new program approvals, faculty appointments, and policy development and implementation.
  • Assures quality education services for students are being delivered by administering the division curriculum as it pertains to the catalog, brochures and flyers, changes to the courses and programs, proposals to the Curriculum Committee, course outlines, class syllabi, textbook selection, activities of the program advisory committees and program reviews as necessary.
  • Monitors adequacy of instructional equipment, computer hardware and instructional software, and related supplies to ensure the division remains current with advancing technology, making recommendations to the VPI for additions or replacements as appropriate.
  • Coordinates activities of advisory committees, recommending members to the VP of Instruction for appointment, to foster a culture of engagement and empowerment.
  • Contributes to the achievement of the College’s retention goals for students as a liaison between area high schools and four-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of articulation and transfer agreements.
  • Makes a positive impact on academic excellence and inclusive achievement as a liaison between high schools and two-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of articulation and transfer agreements.
  • Implements policies and procedures related to faculty recruitment, hiring, appraising, promotion, and other personnel actions that contribute to the instructional and service functions of the College. Establishes and maintains a climate that encourages personnel development and retention and a high morale level.
  • Establishes and maintains an accessible, equitable, and inclusive work climate that encourages the professional development of its members, the retention of qualified and competent faculty and staff, and a high level of morale, collaboration, and cooperation within the division.
  • Assures fairness and the application of appropriate procedures by assisting with employee grievances and other faculty personnel issues through investigating, gathering information, and reporting findings to the Vice President of Instruction.
  • Develops and supports cultural consciousness and diversity awareness by coordinating activities with other administrators and various stakeholders to accomplish the College's mission, vision, and values.
  • Fosters collaboration and coordination to maintain effective relations with faculty and students.
  • Maintains and demonstrates fiscal responsibility for budgets associated within the division by preparing a comprehensive division budget with input from appropriate resources for consideration by the VPI. Authorizes expenditures within the confines of the approved budget, keeping the VPI well informed of any variances. Works with division faculty, staff, grant coordinators, and the VPI to secure and/or allocate appropriate funding for unexpected expenditures.
  • Promotes co-op/internship and other experiential learning opportunities for the division, in conjunction with the experiential learning coordinator.
  • Provides administrative direction and support to activities of the workforce development, employment services, and lifelong learning offices, including economic development and employment services, noncredit contract and customized training, lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Serves as the coordinator and chief support personnel for the management of Lumens, the non-credit programming management system.
  • Assures a coherent approach to the management of the division by taking the lead role in policy development and evaluating college and departmental policies, plans, and processes in relationship to other College policies, faculty handbook requirements, state and federal regulations, and trends in higher education.
  • Promotes an integrated effort in the administration of the College by maintaining collegial and professional relationships with other administrators, other higher education leaders, and staff by participating in activities of Campus committees and task forces.
  • Provides results-driven leadership and strategic vision as liaison officer with accrediting agencies that evaluate academic programs within the division.
  • Investigates student complaints and reports potential issues to the appropriate supervisor/VP/College office in a timely manner. Holds students accountable to the College’s Code of Conduct and course/program policies. Facilitates disciplines according to policy. Handles and forwards student appeals according to published procedures.
  • Facilitates a service-oriented approach to student development by participating in the development and implementation of long- and short-range goals designed to meet the needs of current and prospective students.
  • Promotes a positive image and maintains effective relationships for the Vice President of Instruction by representing the Vice President at various meetings, communicating with College administrators, faculty, staff, and students in matters related to academic affairs, and leading or serving on selected College committees and task forces.
  • Communicates the purpose and importance of student outcomes assessment and academic program evaluation as supporting the continual and systematic improvement of instruction and student outcomes.
  • Supports departments and academic programs in the development of assessment plans to streamline and support quality improvement.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to faculty and various College departments to develop assessment projects and programs in order to provide data and analysis used to continuously improve the operation of the division through improved courses, learning environments, and student success.
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and the development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Teaches on a limited bases as assigned
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Vice President of Instruction.
  • Supports the overall success of the College by performing other duties utilizing similar skills and abilities, related to the accomplishment of the essential functions of this job, and ensures the assignments are completed in the best interest of the College.

Requirements

Master's degree in a discipline or field within the division, or related field; 4-10 years related teaching and/or administrative experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
