Position Summary
The Director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) directs, coordinates, and provides instruction for EMS programming per Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) accreditation standards. The Director of EMS assists the Program Sponsor and division dean with existing program planning, implementation, evaluation, and new program development, including certification requirements.
Essential Job Functions
- With the assistance of the Dean of Health Sciences, EMS Program Sponsor, and EMS Program Physician Director, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates EMS educational program offerings. Adapts EMS curricula to reflect State requirements, local needs, and national trends.
- Works with the dean to establishes EMS course schedules each semester, assigns faculty loads per college policies, budget considerations, room limitations, and faculty credentials, experience, and areas of expertise.

Serves as Instructor Coordinator (IC), as needed, in compliance with MDHHS IC performance standards as indicated in the IC curriculum.

In the role of IC:
- Develops, coordinates, and evaluates curricular elements, including those of a clinical nature, and selects and evaluates EMS program faculty and staff, with the approval of the program sponsor and physician director.
- Plans course content and ensures it complies with program requirements.
- Assists in the evaluation and selection of students.
- Evaluates and maintains records of student performance.
- Maintains and assures the availability of equipment and training aids.
- Coordinates and maintains records of clinical experience.
- Counsels and assists students, as appropriate.
- Prepares, within 30 days of course completion, a list of students who successfully completed the course for the MDHHS.

In the role of IC:
- With Division Dean, maintains and obtains clinical affiliation contracts and mandatory legal documentation such as license verification, liability insurance, qualifications of preceptors/adjunct faculty.
- Secures and maintains required program accreditation, certification, and licensure and adheres to all established standards for educational quality.
- Adheres to all Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services requirements for an approved program.
- Assesses student performance and progress to provide appropriate feedback and promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants.
- Meets with students, staff members, and other educators to discuss students' instructional programs and other issues.
- Identifies students needing assistance and refers students to Student Services. Collaborates with Student Services and the Learning Resources staff members to help students adjust to the learning environment.
- Reports student complaints and potential issues to the Division Dean in a timely manner.
- Holds students accountable to the college’s code of conduct and course/program policies. Facilitates discipline according to policy. Handles and forwards student appeals according to published procedures.
- Holds orientation sessions for new students and staff as needed.
- Participates in activities that promote the EMS Program, including student recruiting and program marketing events, as appropriate.
- Assists in the selection of students for program admissions, retention, and job placement efforts.
- Serves as liaison between area high schools, middle colleges, and two-/four-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of articulation and transfer agreements in the area of EMS.
- Prepares and delivers instruction in EMS classes and labs. Teaches and facilitates 21-st century learners utilizing multiple class formats. Manages a classroom/lab in a way that contributes to an atmosphere that encourages mutual respect and civility.
- Manages EMS classrooms and maintains labs to ensure a safe and productive learning environment; orders and maintains lab supplies and equipment. Works with other division programs to coordinate lab usage.
- Works with faculty to expand EMS program offerings, develops curricula, assessments, and lab projects to improve student success in a multitude of delivery modalities.
- Engages in the assessment of student learning and program evaluation with the EMS faculty, Program Sponsor, EMS Program Physician Director and the Dean of Health Sciences to determine the effectiveness of instruction and curriculum.
- Prepares and maintains all required documentation and administrative reports.
- Fulfills EMS educational program administrative requirements: prepare and submit complete, accurate educational records, data and reports.
- Maintains student and operational records (including student files, examination tools, admission criteria, any records of denied admissions, counseling records, or student dismissal) for a minimum of 7 years as per accreditation requirements.
- Develops a competent, productive, and efficient departmental staff by hiring, supervising, assigning, and evaluating EMS faculty and staff.
- Holds regular advisory committee meetings per accreditation requirements. Maintains advisory committee membership records and meeting minutes.
- Participates in continuing professional development programs as appropriate, including maintenance of required licensures and certifications.
- Remains current on best practices in teaching so that instruction is delivered for various learning styles, uses the latest supportive technology, and utilizes alternative delivery methods.
- Contributes to an educational environment that respects diversity and demonstrates a commitment to multiculturalism.
- Contributes to the overall success of the division by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned, maintaining high levels of accuracy, maintaining a professional demeanor and appropriate levels of confidentiality, collegiality, and providing excellent customer service.
Requirements
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. EMT-Paramedic license in the State of Michigan and have held that status for at least five years. Current EMS Instructor/Coordinator license in the State of Michigan. American Heart Association BLS/ACLS/PALS Instructor Certification.
- Master’s degree in teaching, administration or health-related field preferred. PHTLS instructor, Fire and/or Police experience and instructor qualifications, supervisory, and community college teaching experience preferred
- Successful completion of criminal background check.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising professional staff.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises support staff, administrators, professional staff, faculty, and adjunct faculty in EMS programs. Executes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the organization's policies, which includes the Code of Ethics. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge of Database software/systems; Internet software. Working knowledge of Micro Soft Suite.
