The successful candidate is an administrator with demonstrated success in the education of professional students.

She/he is an innovator who ensures that the educational experience encountered by each student is in accordance with the stated mission of Meharry Medical College and the School of Dentistry and provides for appropriate levels of self-direction and personalization. She/he promotes wellness and support to ensure that all students meet their potential, including monitoring individual student performance and providing targeted support and remediation programming to students in need.

She/he organizes or assists in organizing student events such as the White Coat Ceremony, Convocation, Graduation, etc.

She works alongside and supports student organizations with their meetings, events, travel, etc.

She/he works closely with the Dean of Academic Affairs and Dean of External Affairs. She/he reports to the Dean of the School of Dentistry.

Daily Operations

  • Oversees dental student affairs to promote an exceptional learning experience for our students. Serves as the principal assistant to the Dean of the School of Dentistry in ensuring resources requisite to the achievement of student goals and objectives are made available to academic departments, schools, and faculties, facilitating overall student experience. Serves as school liaison for activities related to Student Affairs. Some travel required.
  • Annually reviews and updates policies and procedures related to student affairs; and in identifying problems and outlining potential solutions, including the analyses required to present alternatives and supporting justification.
  • Provides school-wide professional development for all students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty in the School of Dentistry: develops School-wide professional development programming; presents professional development at orientation; schedules professional development workshops and seminars; and helps all students with career development - CV writing, interview skills.
  • Director of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for the School of Dentistry.
  • Participates in education research activities, including submitting grants that build the education infrastructure, support education research, or support graduate training.
  • Teaches didactic or clinical skills as appropriate in a department related to his/her expertise.
  • Represents the SOD to work with student-led bodies such as the SNDA, as well as serving on committees such as the Committee on Student Affairs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including teaching as needed.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of student needs in the health professions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent skills in organization and prioritization
  • Ability to identify and balance a range of student needs and priorities.
  • Must be able to expertly handle multiple tasks and priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must be well-organized and pay attention to details.
  • Must be able to take the lead when needed and be a self-starter.
  • Must possess computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and concepts, including use of electronic resources such as Dropbox, Adobe, Zoom, and Outlook.
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to handle confidential data.

Required Education And Experience

  • DDS or PhD in a related subject.
  • If candidate holds a DDS, either a license or ability to become licensed to practice dentistry in the State of Tennessee.
  • Experience in Student Affairs or related areas, preferably in an environment of health profession students.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated ability to work with individuals in the academic community.
