The Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB) collects data on health-related practices and health status, conducts data analysis to identify risk factors, describes the distribution of disease, and implements evidence-based injury prevention strategies. IBEB - Substance Use Epidemiology Section, in particular, conducts surveillance on substance use (including alcohol), assesses its negative health consequences, and promotes the use of effective interventions to address public health issues resulting from substance use.
Why does the job exist?
The SUDORS Data Abstractor is primarily responsible for collecting and abstracting information on accidental drug overdose deaths occurring in New Mexico using the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). The Data Abstractor reviews information from multiple sources including death certificates and medical examiner records, and abstracts and enters accurate data into NVDRS, using appropriate coding guidelines. This position is responsible for entering timely, complete and accurate data to meet CDC surveillance objectives. The Data Abstractor will complete the NVDRS module for drug overdose deaths, complete all changes need after CDC edits, participate in any routine data quality assurance activities and be a backup for abstraction of violent deaths.
How does it get done?
- Abstract surveillance information on drug overdose deaths from death certificates, medical examiner reports and toxicology results according to SUDORS coding guidelines, meeting all CDC deadlines.
- Assist with NVDRS abstraction (20% of time).
- Attend all SUDORS workgroup calls as scheduled by CDC.
- Attend all SUES, IBEB, and other DOH staff meetings, as scheduled.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in business administration and two (2) years of experience in the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
