Under general supervision, the Community Relations Coordinator position will serve as the coordinator and Chair for the Human Relations Commission which is responsible for identifying concerns in the area of human relations and make recommendations regarding these issues and engage in activities that shall effectively promote equality in such areas as economic, educational, governmental and cultural life of the community for all citizens without regard to race, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or disability and work to eliminate discrimination of any of these bases. The Human Relations Commission is a twenty-one-member Board appointed by the Pitt County Board of Commissioners. Reports to the Assistant County Manager/Human Resources Director.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Serves as coordinator and Chair for the Human Relations Commission (HRC) by attending monthly meetings; researches complaints; provides professional advice and direction to the Commission; Work involves creating, coordinating, and maintaining a permanent record of HRC Board actions including historical and current official records; researching, interpreting and analyzing various reports and activities;In consultation with the Pitt County Legal Department, interprets human and civil rights laws and regulations. Facilitates and assists with the resolution of potentially controversial human rights situations. Manages the development and daily administration of goals and objectives for the Human Relations Commission as they relate to the support of enforcement of the County’s Human Relations Ordinance specific to equity and community relations enforcement and compliance.Advises the Board of County Commissioners and related Boards of Human Relations Issues.Serves as a liaison between the County and various stakeholders to improve communication on needs and problems.Reviews and investigates complaints and/or concerns from citizens on various subjects through the established complaint process. Develops partnerships with agencies, institutions, and townships addressing neighborhood needs and acting as the point of contact regarding programs and related services.Schedules meetings and mediations with involved parties; and provides outside assistancewith outside agencies.Promotes positive ethnicity relations; contacts the Human Relations Commission and determine topics and themes for meetings; and creates public service announcements for media.Promotes Inclusive Community Initiative by determining events and activities; establishes event date, time, and details layout; coordinates sponsor responsibilities; recruits volunteers; secures vendor supplies; designs brochures and flyers; and updates the County’s website.Prepares correspondence and agendas for the Human Relations Commission; conducts and coordinates seminars and workshops; records and transcribes minutes; and performs other administrative functions for the Human Relations Commission.ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONSPerforms other related work as required.

Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid North Carolina driver’s license and be willing to travel locally as required during work hours.
