Summary/objective
The vice president for institutional advancement (VP for IA) reports to the president and serves as the chief advancement officer for the College, overseeing all fundraising and development activities. The vice president provides vision and leadership to assist the president in attaining the College’s advancement and institutional goals.
The vice president oversees the advancement (development and alumni relations) team and is an experienced development professional with a successful history as a major and principal gift fundraiser. Position holds oversight responsibility for all development functions including, but not limited to, major gifts cultivation and solicitation, Annual Fund and Reunion giving, alumni relations, advancement support services, corporate and foundation relations, and donor relations. The vice president is responsible for cultivation strategy and solicitation of a select portfolio of leadership donors. In addition, the position oversees the office of college relations (OCR) and provides the OCR team with strategic leadership in advancing the institution’s external marketing, branding, and communications efforts.

- Serve as a member of the President’s Leadership Team working closely with members of the Board of Trustees, alumni, corporations and foundations, parents, and friends of the College.
- Plan, organize, and implement all fundraising and advancement programs, including alumni relations, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, capital campaigns, and special events.
- Prepare for review and approval of the annual operating budget for the office of institutional advancement, as well as annual fundraising goals and objectives congruent with the strategic plan of the College.
- Design and conduct analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the College’s advancement activities for presentation to the president and appropriate committees of the Board.
- Serve as the representative of the advancement function to Board committees as warranted and staff committees as required.
- Represent the College to various constituencies with the goal of developing and maintaining a portfolio of donors and advancing the president’s fundraising initiatives.
- Develop effective major donor programs involving area, regional, and national corporations, foundations, and individuals.
- Actively participate with the office of college relations on messaging communications that convey the mission of Randolph College to its national and international constituencies and the public at large.
- Other duties as assigned by the president or as requested on behalf of the College.
Competencies
- Progressive fundraising experience including functional leadership in an academic or nonprofit environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills at all levels, including development of relationships with members of governance and administrative bodies, students, alumni, staff, volunteers, current and prospective donors, corporate and foundation executives, community representatives, and other key groups.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Budgeting and fiscal management for a moderately sized organization or a moderately sized unit of a large organization.
- A strong process orientation is required to ensure the development and maintenance of appropriate procedures for the operation of the office of institutional advancement.
- Capital campaign experience in an academic institution or a complex nonprofit organization is preferred.
Supervisory responsibilities
Provide leadership and strategic direction for the College’s advancement and college relations teams, which consists of approximately 20 employees.
Work environment
Position typically works in an office environment.
Physical demands
Requires standing/walking/sitting for extended periods of time. May occasionally lift 10/15 lbs.
Travel required
Extensive travel including evening and weekend work.
Required education and experience
BS/BA required.
Preferred education and experience
Post-graduate degree preferred.
