What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operator/Inspector position at Rockett Special Utility District?
The position is directly responsible to the Construction Support Supervisor and Operations Foreman for inspecting and locating the district’s water lines. Duties include supervising contractors in installing new water lines, locating all water lines, and maintaining required reports for the operational control of the distribution system.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Supervising contractors in the installation of new water lines.
- Locating all water lines.
- Performs mechanical tasks such as repairing, adjusting, and maintaining the water plants and distribution system as necessary.
- Responds to and investigates consumer complaints related to construction projects or line locates.
- Assist in maintaining up-to-date maps showing valve hydrants and line locations.
- Investigate leaks and repairs as necessary.
- Performs mechanical tasks in the repair, adjustment, and maintenance of the Pump Stations and distribution system.
- Maintain a logbook of daily activities, including interaction with contractors
- Recommends transmission and distribution system improvements and expansions to the Operations Foreman, Assistant Operations Manager and Operations Manager.
- Submit accurate time reports to the Operations Foreman, Assistant Operations Manager, and Operations Manager as directed.
- Be honest, loyal, and fair with District employees, Board of Directors, and customers.
- Be able to work in all types of weather.
- Be able to work well with fellow employees and contractors.
- Be able to take directions from the Construction Support Supervisor, Operations Foreman, Assistant Operations Manager, and Operations Manager.
- Ability to read Blueprints and Plans for various construction projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have a current driver’s license and a clean driving record. Two (2) years in Water Distribution and a Class “C” water license is a plus.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Knowledge of processes and equipment involved in water distribution is desirable.
- Understanding operational and administrative practices and procedures involved in a successful water distribution system is desirable.
- Ability to conduct/supervise water quality test(s) when required.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with contractors and other employees.
- Ability to keep vehicles and work areas clean and orderly.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of materials needed on hand.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to all types of weather conditions, occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. The employee is required to walk, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move, more than 100 pounds. The employee must regularly use hand tools as needed or called upon to do. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision abilities, and depth perception. The employee may be required to work in a trench from time to time.

Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action to take at any given point and time. Must handle novel and diverse work problems on a daily basis. Personal maturity is an important attribute. Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.
