Description : Welder / Pipe Fitter

Reports to : Shop Production Manager

General Welder / Pipe Fitter Job Summary : Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, bridge parts, and pressure vessels, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements.

Includes experimental welders who analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations where procedural information is unavailable.

Job Scope / Duties :

Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.

Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.

Cuts work pieces using plasma cutter, oxy-acetelene torch or any other type of cutting tool.

Welder must be able to perform stick, mig and heli arc welding. Ability to work with aluminum and stainless steel is a plus.

Melts lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.

Installs or repairs equipment, such as lead pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings.

Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.

Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.

Removes rough spots from work piece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.

Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.

Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.

Changes Gas and Oxygen bottles as needed and stores bottles in designated area following all safety procedures.

Must have own welding hood.

Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.

Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.

Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.

Determines the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Conducts tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

Installs equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet work and job specifications.

Maintains clean and safe work area.

Uses mathematics to solve problems and perform routine calculations needed produce required results. Requires working knowledge of metric measurements and the ability to convert from English to Metric as needed.

Completes all other assigned tasks as requested.

Must be able to complete drug screening and be able to submit to random testing.

Participates in regular shop personnel meetings, continuing training, safety meetings.

Accurately accounts for time worked following company standard time keeping procedures.

Work Experience Required :

Minimum 2 -5 years welding and pipe fitting experience.

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools required to effectively and safely complete job. Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.

This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of completed products.

The ability to function well as part of a team. Must be flexible for occasional overtime to include weekends when necessary.

Other requirements :

Must have a valid TWIC card

Must have a US passport to travel outside the country for work when needed.

Must be able to pass an extensive background check

Must be able to pass a drug test

Must pass a weld test on carbon steel pipe

Must be AWS Certified

ABS Certification preferred

Marine experience preferred

Must have Valid ID or DL or be able to obtain DL in the future

Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.

Comfortable working at heights and in various weather conditions.

Ability to travel 75%, up to 3 weeks at a time

Shifts / Hours : Mon-Fri

Mon-Fri

8am -5pm at shop w / 1 hr lunch

Must be open to working OT, Weekends and Nights if needed during traveling assignments

Pay : $30 depending on experience / weld test

Up to $2100 w 60 hours / week
