Security Benefit Life Insurance Company (SBLIC) is searching for a motivated attorney to join our Law Department. You will work in our home office in Topeka, Kansas and report to the Second Vice President and Assistant General Counsel. SBLIC associates are working in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work.

Position Overview
As in-house counsel, you will provide broad support to the Law and Compliance Departments, with an emphasis on:
Litigation management
Annuity product development and enhancement
Complaint and dispute resolution
Regulatory compliance
General corporate matters, including corporate governance
You will have significant opportunities for growth on the team. As you gain expertise in insurance and securities regulation, and familiarity with SBLIC’s products and operations, you will assume greater responsibilities and work more independently.
Key Responsibilities
Provide support on litigation matters, including managing outside counsel, responding to subpoenas, drafting legal holds, reviewing court documents, and maintaining litigation records
Draft, review and negotiate documents related to annuity products, including fund company participation agreements, policy forms, riders and related marketing materials
Assist the Compliance Department with complaint and dispute resolution, including responding to insurance department inquiries and drafting settlement agreements
Collaborate with product and sales teams to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements while achieving business goals
Contribute to regulatory compliance, corporate governance and other projects as assigned by Law and Compliance Department leadership
Qualifications
Required Experience and Skills
3 to 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney
JD from an accredited law school and member in good standing of a state bar, with the ability to become licensed for in-house practice in Kansas (if not already)
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and produce high-quality, business-friendly legal work
Commitment to continuous professional development and a willingness to grow into a larger role
Strong oral and written communication skills
Excellent research and legal writing abilities
Dedication to community involvement and “giving back”
Preferred Experience and Skills
Knowledge of and experience advising on insurance and securities laws as applicable to annuities, including:
NAIC Model Laws and Regulations
Interstate Insurance Product Regulatory Commission (IIPRC) standards
Section 72 of the Internal Revenue Code
FINRA Rules, the Investment Company Act of 1940, and the Securities Act of 1933
Familiarity with insurance laws applicable to the Company’s business, particularly the Kansas Insurance Holding Company Act
Previous experience working for a life insurance company, state insurance department, or self-regulatory organization
Compensation
Competitive in the market and commensurate with experience.
Location
The position is located at SBLIC’s corporate headquarters in Topeka, Kansas. Associates are working in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work. SBLIC may consider basing the role out of its Kansas City metro office (specifically, Overland Park) for the right candidate, with occasional travel to Topeka required.
