What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Attorney General - Public Protection Division position at Kansas Attorney General?
The Office of the Kansas Attorney General seeks an experienced and organized leader to manage the wide-ranging work of the Public Protection Division while guiding and mentoring subordinate attorneys through complicated and often-difficult litigation.
The Public Protection Division has a wide ranging mission. Our litigators fight to maintain a fair and competitive business environment, ensure all levels of government in our state remain open and transparent, and work to ensure our citizens are safe from violent predators. Attorneys in the Public Protection Division can be a voice for the voiceless, standing up for consumers and citizens who have been swindled by scammers, exploited through unlawful business practices, or subjected to uncooperative government officials.
The Division is divided into five litigating Sections : the Antitrust & Business Organizations Section, the Charities & Financial Scams Section, the Consumer Protection Section, the Open Government Section, and the Sexually Violent Predator Section. (A brief description of each section can be found here ) Each section is headed by a First Assistant Attorney General who reports to the Deputy Attorney General. The Deputy Attorney General also works closely with and supervises the Division's special agent in charge, who manages the investigative staff. Attorneys in the Division have a wide range of experience levels, but most are in their first decade of law practice, so experience mentoring early career attorneys is a plus.
The Division works closely with other states in multi-state investigations, and both the Consumer Protection and Open Government Sections give annual reports to the Legislature. Therefore, the successful candidate must be able to communicate with tact and lead the Division with wisdom and strategic vision, always keeping an eye on the OAG's mission and the Attorney General's vision and priorities. Given the size of the division and the broad scope of its work, the Deputy Attorney General must also have excellent judgement regarding what matters must receive close attention and what can be safely delegated.
