Job Overview
We seek a dynamic Executive Director to lead our small but vibrant Historical Society in Seneca Falls, NY. This Executive Director plays a pivotal role in steering the Society’s strategic direction, managing operations, and enhancing our public engagement through innovative programs and exhibits. The ideal candidate will have a passion for history and community engagement, combined with experience in museum or nonprofit management. He or she will have the ability to lead a team, manage multiple projects, and develop strong relationships within the community and with stakeholders.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Public Administration, or a related field.
Experience: Relevant experience in museum management or a leadership role within a historical or cultural organization is highly desirable.
Skills: Leadership, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Experience in budget management, staff supervision, fundraising, and grant writing is highly preferred.

Responsibilities
The Executive Director, Seneca Falls Historical Society shall:

  • Lead the implementation and refinement of the Society’s mission and policies as approved by the Board. Exercise designated powers effectively to meet organizational goals.
  • Serve as the chief officer of the museum staff, overseeing recruitment, training, and, if necessary, termination. Ensure effective team performance and professional growth.
  • Manage daily operations and long-term planning. Coordinate strategic initiatives and ensure alignment with the Society’s objectives.
  • Develop the annual budget in collaboration with the Treasurer and relevant committees. Monitor financial performance and provide detailed reports to the Board.
  • Lead the creation of educational programs, workshops, and exhibits that engage the community and enhance the visibility of the Society.
  • Spearhead grant proposal development with support from staff and external experts to secure funding for Society projects.
  • Promote the Society’s activities and achievements to boost active public interest and participation.
  • Oversee fundraising efforts, including managing the Gift Shop and organizing fundraising events.
  • Manage and contribute to the Society’s communications, including email, website content, social media, and print publications.
  • Develop strategies to increase and sustain Society membership.
  • Ensure the preservation and proper management of the Society’s collections and facilities.
  • Additional Duties: The Executive Director shall perform other tasks as required by the Seneca Falls Historical Society Board of Trustees.
