ESL Instructor for Adult Learners

Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC), a non-profit serving immigrant and refugee families in the DC Metro area, seeks teachers to teach English and/or Citizenship for adult literacy and beginner level English learners.

The SHC ELL Program’s mission is to reach newcomers who have significant barriers to accessing the traditional ESL “system.” We empower people who are isolated and vulnerable members of their community to develop into more confident and self-sufficient English learners. Our approach to teaching and learning is specifically tailored to meet the needs of this student population.

This position is paid $25 per hour. Student engagement on non-class days and class planning time are also compensated (in addition to live teaching time). SHC provides partial reimbursement for teacher personal cell phone usage for class-related purposes. There are also paid opportunities for teacher mentoring, professional development (by outside organizations and by SHC teachers), new student assessments and CASAS assessments.

The position will teach between 2-4 class groups that meet twice per week (on Tuesdays & Thursdays). Online classes will be fully remote and meet on Zoom. There are also in-person opportunities to teach in our mobile classroom or other community locations in Prince George’s County or Montgomery County on Mondays and/or Wednesdays. Availability for in-person teaching (in addition to remote teaching) is highly desired.

Hours taught per week is dependent upon the number of classes but will range between 9-15 hours. SHC classes meet for 11-week sessions during the regular school year, and 5 weeks in the summer.

Responsibilities: Use curriculum provided by SHC to teach ELL and/or citizenship classes.

Requirements (please do not apply if you do not meet these minimum requirements):

• Candidates must have a minimum of one year experience teaching Adult ESL
• Candidates must have a degree or certification in TESOL/TESL/TEFL or similar.
• High level of comfort using Google Drive, Zoom, WhatsApp
• Resides in Maryland, Washington, DC or Northern Virginia

Preferred:

• Experience working with vulnerable communities and adult learners with limited familiarity with and access to technology
• Experience teaching adult literacy and beginner level English learners
• Experience teaching Citizenship preferred for Citizenship class teachers
• Prior online adult ESL teaching experience and use of online teaching tools
• Availability for in-person teaching (in addition to remote teaching)
