Teacher of Deaf / Hard of Hearing PreK-12
Reports To: Director of Special Education
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for both direct and consultative services for students who are deaf/hard of hearing. The person in this position is expected to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program for an educational environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. They must demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds. They will participate in professional activities as well as extracurricular and/or academic support activities. This position is part of the special education team and reports to the special education coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Kansas State Teaching Certification with Deaf or Hard of Hearing Endorsement
- Experience teaching students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Physical/Emotional Requirements: (The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.)
This position requires the performance of light work. The position involves sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing and light lifting. The position requires reaching with arms and hands for long periods. The position also requires the operation of learning technology such as computers, hand-held devices, etc. as well as relevant office equipment.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Plans instruction as needed per Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Records student progress and other data as required per IEPs and school monitoring procedures.
- Develop appropriate IEP goals based on data and the educational needs of the child
- Use appropriate amplification devices effectively with deaf and hard of hearing children
- Adjust the type of communication used in the classroom to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children.
- Instruct, encourage and monitor student’s learning-adjusting strategies as needed to optimize learning.
- Consult with parents, other professionals, agencies, and support staff regarding student educational needs.
- In-services parents, teachers, students, and interpreters on various issues regarding working with children who have a hearing loss
- Maintain accurate, complete records of students’ progress-and prepare all required related documentation.
- Administers appropriate educational assessment instruments and interprets data.
- Participate and contribute as requested in meetings with department, school, district, parents and community.
- Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with district rules and procedures.
- Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
- Participate in extracurricular and academic support activities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members by using American Sign Language, Spoken and Written English, and Electronic Communication.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, peers, and staff.
- Ability to identify areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results.
- Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast paced work environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google.
Terms of Employment:
9 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Support Service Personnel
