Position Summary
The Bonner and Civic Engagement Special Projects Coordinator in the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement at Spelman College plays a key role planning, implementing, and assessing service-learning initiatives, student development programs, and special projects (like the application for the Carnegie Elective Classification in Civic Engagement, The Campus Compact Innovation Grant or the Faculty Fellows Initiative). This position requires a dynamic and organized individual with a passion for faculty engagement, student development, community-based research, service learning, program coordination, and fostering positive social change.

This is a partially grant-funded position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Faculty Engagement:
  • Designs and executes faculty development events to ensure faculty are aware of the resources available in the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement to support Service-Learning courses and faculty led community-based research.
  • Recruits faculty mentors to support integration of academic content and research methods in student’s assessment of community needs, design of community service projects and implementation of initiatives.
  • Collaborates with faculty and community partners to facilitate the smooth operation of programmatic initiatives.


Special Project Management:
  • Manages and coordinates special projects within the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement, including department initiatives like working with faculty to capture and catalog existing Service-Learning courses and creating a plan to expand Service Learning as a high impact practice accessible to Spelman faculty in all departments, launching the Civic Engagement faculty fellows program or facilitating integrated, campus wide efforts like the application for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement.
  • Develops project plans, timelines, and logistics to ensure successful implementation, and when relevant sustainability, of each project.

Program Coordination:
  • Coordinates and executes student development programs to ensure integration of relevant elements of the Bonner Developmental Model and alignment with the overall goals of the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement, Division of Student Affairs and Spelman College.
  • Collaborates with faculty, student leaders, staff, and community partners to facilitate the smooth operation of programmatic initiatives.

Student Development and Support:
  • Guides the development of 4th year Bonner Scholars by:
    • Supports faculty mentor relationship with students by planning and implementing a calendar of events to scaffold effective quarterly conversations between Scholars and their faculty mentor.
    • Conducts bi-weekly check-in meetings to assess student progress with classes, service, and social emotional well-being
    • Ensures student completion of Bonner Developmental model senior milestones:
      • Monitors student academic progress on Spelman ARCH
      • Completes 280hrs of community service(140/semester)
      • Participates in Weekly Class Meetings/ Monthly Bonner Leadership Summits
      • Submits request for Senior Fund
      • Execution of Capstone Project
      • Capstone Presentation
      • Senior Presentation of Learning
      • Senior Retreat
    • Provides mentorship, and guidance for student’s capstone project implementation
    • Fosters leadership development of Spelman students engaged in civic projects and community service activities through regular communication, mentorship, and guidance.
    • Plans and facilitates student leadership development activities.


Data Collection and Reporting:
  • Collects and maintains accurate data related to program participation, community impact, and student outcomes.
  • Prepares regular reports and assessments to measure the effectiveness of student development programs and special projects.

Support for Faculty/Community Partnership Relationships:
  • Coordinates communication and logistics between community partners, Spelman faculty, and students leading community-based initiatives.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with faculty and community partners to cultivate effective collaboration and mutual benefit.

Event Planning and Logistics:
  • Plans and executes events, workshops, and meetings related to faculty engagement , student development and special projects.
  • Create logistics plans, including venue reservations, transportation schedules, catering, and materials preparation.

Communication and Outreach:
  • Contributes to the development of promotional materials and communication strategies to promote civic engagement opportunities and engage faculty and students.
  • Participates in cultivation of a strong Bonner Office of Civic Engagement presence on relevant social media platforms.

Budget Assistance:
  • Supports budget management for programs and special projects, including securing quotes for services, tracking expenses, and ensuring responsible use of resources.

Collaboration and Team Support:
  • Collaborates with other members of the Bonner Office team, faculty, and staff to achieve departmental goals and enhance the overall impact of faculty engagement and student development initiatives.

Provides administrative support as needed to ensure the smooth operation of the Bonner Office


Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required, preferably in faculty engagement, service learning, student development, program coordination, event planning, or related roles. Must possess a commitment to the values of faculty engagement, service learning, student development, civic engagement, community service, and social justice.
Must possess excellent oral communication skills while interacting professionally, with both internal and external community partners. Must be able to handle multiple tasks. This position requires the ability to prioritize effectively and to interact in a diverse community. Incumbent must be able to adapt to changing situations, while working in a fast paced environment. Must be self-motivated, learn quickly, anticipate needs, work independently, and have demonstrated the ability to multi-task. The duties of this position require the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy while working with diverse groups of people.

This position requires being competent in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to compose correspondence, memos, e-mails, creating spreadsheets containing formulas and pivot tables, PowerPoint presentations, the use of Outlook, Internet navigation, and working with databases and dashboards.

Must possess strong interpersonal skills, excellent organizational, follow-through, time management skills, a keen eye for attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce. The ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and external community is required. Ability to analyze and solve problems, draw valid conclusions, and/or develop appropriate alternatives where applicable.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to: sit, walk, hear, talk, use hands to operate computer and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to: stand, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to: climb, stoop, kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.
