This position manages the day-to-day operations of the department in order to ensure the safety of our students, staff, faculty and visitors to St. Catherine University and to the facilities and property within our campus.
Responsibilities include:
- Overall ensure that the daily operations of the Public Safety Department contribute quality safety and support services to all individuals and departments of the university in a manner that is fair, timely and responsive
- Model, train and enforce proper protocols and procedures
- Model, train and coach excellent human interaction skills to develop relationships of trust with people at all levels of our community and with people who come from a variety of cultures and perspectives
- Review incident reports and handle internal and campus paperwork and ensure that policy and procedure manuals are current and available
- Assist the Director with investigations
- Participate in department planning, crime prevention initiatives, and campus event planning
In the Directors absence, serves as the Public Safety member of the St. Catherine University Emergency Operations staff - Collaborate with internal constituents through participation in committees and projects, and collaborate with external law enforcement agencies and constituents
- Collaborate with Human Resources to advertise, hire and onboard new employees for open positions
- Collaborate with Human Resources to creatively approach hiring solutions
- Proactively connect and communicate with candidates
- Include Public Safety Supervisors in the hiring process
- Assess candidates and hire employees
- Evaluate employee performance and reward, coach and discipline as appropriate
- Create scheduling for campus security
- Oversee upkeep and maintenance of equipment and sufficient supplies

Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of public safety experience
- Two years of supervisory experience including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, coaching and disciplining staff
- Available for on-call duty
- Able to stand, walk and run as an emergency requires
- Able to work throughout campus where, during rounds, there will be exposures to temperature extremes, noise, and heights and during emergencies
AND EITHER
- AA / AS degree in criminal justice, social work, communication, political science, or law enforcement
OR
- Combination of education and public safety experience to equal two years
Preferred Qualifications
- Security experience in higher education
- Experience with interpreting and enforcing state and federal criminal/civil law including Orders for Protection, Harassment/Retraining Orders, City of St. Paul ordinances, legislative mandates, Student Right-To-Know, campus Security (Clery) Act, Campus Security Authority and the Omnibus Anti-Crime Act
- Experience with advanced investigative techniques and procedures
- Certification in Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), active shooter response, crisis intervention, fire safety, emergency management, self-defense/defensive tactics, and investigation and interrogation
- Other certifications through professional security/public safety organizations
