Library Assistant
Department of Learning Resources

Primary Purpose
The Library Assistant is responsible for physically staffing service areas as needed to ensure coverage, provide department services, and to enforce all College policies and procedures. The Library Assistant assists with duties and activities relating to circulation, technical services, acquisitions, and collection maintenance functions.

Reports to
Campus library manager.

Description of Duties and Tasks
1. Physically staffs service points and performs associated tasks in the circulation area following established policies and procedures; maintains the security of the circulation area by keeping unauthorized persons out; assists Librarians in maintaining a scholarly atmosphere in all service areas.

2. Answers directional and informational questions; maintains awareness of the library, learning resources, and academic support tools and services available to SJR State students; remains knowledgeable about those resources and the information provided on the public-facing Learning Resources web site; maintains knowledge of and refers patrons to other College services; directs reference/research questions to a Librarian; answers the Library’s circulation desk telephone, routes calls, takes messages.

3. Explains and enforces College policies, rules, and regulations including the Learning
Resources Access Policy.

4. Participates in daily maintenance of attendance and usage statistics; assists Librarians with compilation of student survey data.

5. Participates in department outreach and engagement activities as needed including organization, set up, and promotion as directed; assists Librarians with class set-up and creation of displays as needed.

6. Processes new acquisitions and serials for campus library according to policies and procedures established by the department; repairs materials if possible; reports subscription issues to Technical Services LTA for resolution.

7. Monitors campus library’s technical services supplies and submits requests to Learning
Resources Office Specialist.

8. Keeps campus library manager informed of all issues concerning serials, processing, and general library operations.

9. Using LibGuides, updates system assets and relevant page(s) with campus acquisitions using established department procedures and templates; shares updates with campus library community as directed.

10. Processes withdrawn items following department procedures; coordinates disposal of weeded items; maintains annual list of weeded materials.

11. As directed by campus library manager, trains part-time library assistants in related technical services tasks; monitors the activities of part-time library assistants performing technical services tasks reporting issues of concern to campus library manager; identifies additional technical services tasks for part-time library assistants and relays them to campus library manager for prioritization.

12. Assists Library Technical Assistant (LTA) with collection maintenance activities including shelving, shelf reading, annual inventory, searching for items claimed returned, and special projects.

13. Assists LTA with upkeep of campus library facility and maintenance of the campus library’s event calendar and space bookings in LibCal; serves as the secondary location contact for booking services.

14. Assists LTA with registration of library users and maintenance of user accounts following procedures established by the department and FLVC; refers issues regarding user access to library resources to LTA or campus library manager.

15. Remains current in department practices and procedures and engages in professional development activities through notifications sent to employees’ College email address and resources provided on the Learning Resources Employee Guide web site; remains aware of College business and policies from all departments as notified through the
College’s email system.

16. Ensures seamless continuity of library services during all hours of operation by communicating with coworkers and campus library manager in a timely manner.

17. Performs opening and/or closing procedures of the library and related department areas following department procedures as needed.

18. Participates as needed in circulation and/or technical services committees or meetings to discuss department-wide issues, policies, and procedures.

19. Provides basic computer assistance to students including use of the College’s licensed
Microsoft Office tools, the College portal, and learning resources systems and tools.

20. Reports problems with College computers, printers, network/wifi, or software programs to IT and notifies coworkers that the issue has been reported.

21. Performs other duty as assigned by the Dean of Learning Resources.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to limit span of control to area of primary purpose, deferring to campus library manager any concerns outside the span of control.
2. Ability to maintain confidentiality of all library transactions, library records, and student records in keeping with College policy, the State of Florida, and federal legislation.

3. Strong English language skills; ability to communicate professionally and effectively with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and the public in person, by telephone, and by email.

4. Ability to learn and implement policies and procedures established by the College, department, and/or FLVC and partners.

5. Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
6. Ability to master library management system software.
7. Knowledge of or ability to learn relevant computer programs including Word, Excel,

PowerPoint, Outlook, Banner, Chrome, and any library or learning resources management systems used in daily library operations.

8. Ability to adapt to change.
9. Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.
10. Ability to maintain a professional, cooperative, working relationship with all department staff members and College personnel.
11. Ability to work evenings and weekends as assigned.
12. Ability to attend training sessions in any modality as required.
13. Ability to perform all of the above job functions for an eight-hour shift, with an hour lunch break, without a significant risk of injury.
14. Ability to perform all of the above job functions, with minimal direct supervision, within six weeks after the employee begins work.

Pay: $32,625.00 - $35,000.00 per year
