Description

The Steadman Philippon Research Institute is known throughout the world for our research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of orthopaedic disorders. We are committed to solving orthopaedic problems that limit an individual's ability to maintain an active life. SPRI offers Research Assistant internship positions to advance its research mission and to provide a unique opportunity for research participation to future clinicians, scientists, and engineers. Research Assistant interns support Steadman Philippon Research Institutes staff in research tasks including, Center for Outcomes-Based Orthopaedic Research (COOR) and Center for Regenerative and Personalized Medicine (CRPM).

Research Fellows (3rd Year Gap Medical Students) positions have been filled for 2025.

CRPM - May not interview until April or May

Utilizes molecular and cellular biology techniques to investigate regenerative medicine strategies to improve the function of musculoskeletal tissues damaged by injury, age, or disease. Our lab focuses on a bench-to-bedside strategy where we perform both basic and clinical research studies with the aim of enhancing the lives of our patients. CRPM research assistant intern, may work in a semi-independent manner under one of the Program Directors and be responsible for performing a wide variety of assays including : cell culture, flow cytometry, microscopy, gene therapy, protein and gene expression analysis. You may design, plan, conduct, and coordinate experiments to contribute high-quality data for research grants, manuscripts, and presentations in support of various research projects. The position is highly collaborative and may work with the clinical teams in the Steadman Clinic and the Imaging, Robotics, Biomotion, and Clinical Outcomes departments.

COOR - May not interview until April or May

The Center for Outcomes-Based Orthopaedic Research is the longest standing department at SPRI. The team has been tracking and studying patient outcomes for over thirty years and is now tracking over 47,000 surgeries in the COOR database. The team has collected over 185,000 subjective patient questionnaires and has over 150,000 unique patients included in the database.

COOR conducts evidence-based, patient-centered, research to aid both physicians and patients in making better and more informed treatment decisions. The Research Assistant interns responsibilities may include patient contact, research data management and analysis, manuscript writing, and preparing research presentations.

Major Responsibilities / Essential Functions (may vary depending on department) :

  • Preparing and conducting experimental lab procedures.
  • Conducting literature reviews.
  • Compiling research data, preparing presentations.
  • Writing manuscripts for journal publication.
  • Book chapters.
  • Case reports and surgical technique papers.
  • Co-authorship is attainable for research assistant interns according to the same policy that applies to all SPRI researchers (ICMJE guidelines).
  • Maintain personal commitment to the Steadman Philippon Research Institutes Foundation's mission and values.
  • Maintain confidentiality of acquired information.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a related field preferred. Strong pre-medical candidate a plus.
  • Strong customer service interaction and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and physicians.
  • Well-developed administrative skills with a pro-active approach to organizing tasks.

  • Classification :

    Employment duration of one-year with very limited summer opportunities, full-time, non-exempt position, paid internship at $20 per hour, with Temporary Full-time benefits plus monthly rent stipend reimbursement of $500 with proof of valid lease. Generally, these positions begin at the start of the academic summer (May / June, annually). Duration availability for summer is ten weeks or more.

    Application Process

    We typically do not actively review candidates except during February - April annually. An initial evaluation of current applications typically occurs between the February - April timeframe with written, video, or phone follow-up interviews occurring afterward. Initial selections are normally finalized during March and April. Availability may not be known in a few positions until June. If there are remaining openings, a second evaluation of all applications will be conducted on or after April 1.

    Note : The Research Assistant internship role is extremely competitive with approximately four total openings annually, inclusive of all SPRI research departments.
