Description
Innovation at its Best: Join our Forward-Thinking Company
At CableLabs we wake up every day to invent the future. CableLabs is a global, award-winning innovation and R&D lab dedicated to keeping people connected by building and orchestrating emergent technology and igniting co-innovation today for the broadband of tomorrow.
This internship position resides in the Advanced Optical Group, Wired Department at CableLabs. This department focuses on developing new scalable network solutions for the cable industry. Our team plays a crucial role in specifying, testing, and generally moving the industry quickly toward deployment of these new solutions.
Why This Role Is Exciting
You will get to learn conventional/distributed hybrid fiber coaxial access networks and multiple optical technologies (coherent detection, fiber communications and sensing). You will help design and build a cutting-edge distributed fiber optical sensing platform in the CableLabs’ advanced optics laboratory. You will also help develop digital signal processing and machine learning algorithms to process fiber sensing data. You may also get to participate in working group meetings which involve cable operator architects and engineers.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct a scientific literature survey on the latest developments in distributed fiber optical sensing.
- Characterize electrical / optical components and automate lab test and measurement equipment.
- Develop new digital signal processing and machine learning algorithms to process data generated by distributed fiber sensors.
- Simulate an end-to-end fiber sensing system in MATLAB, Python, VPI, or related tools.
- Design a test plan to show the effectiveness of fiber sensors in communication networks.
- Analyze the results, consolidate results, and share reports with technical teams.
- Other engineering tasks and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
What Is a Must Have
- Currently enrolled in Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Geophysics or related discipline.
- Good knowledge of optical communication and digital signal processing fundamentals.
- Experience with working in an optical laboratory and using test equipment (oscilloscopes, waveform generators, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
- Proficiency in a scientific programming language such as MATLAB or Python.
- Ability to consolidate test results and present them in a concise manner.
- Excellent written and communication/presentation skills
What Will Set You Apart
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Geophysics or related discipline.
- Prior research experience in distributed optical fiber sensing systems.
- Prior experience with VPITransmissionMaker or other photonic simulation software.
- Track record of publications in top conferences such as OFC, ECOC, etc.
