The Surgical Skills Laboratory Manager is responsible for coordinating all matters related to the operation of the Surgical Skills laboratory.

Managerial/Administrative

  • Manage operations of the Surgical Skills Laboratory to meet the needs of surgeons, trainees and researchers utilizing the lab.
  • Maintain (and update as needed) policies for safe, efficient use of the Surgical Skills lab.
  • Host surgical labs primarily for internal use (attendings, fellows, international scholars, athletic training residents, etc.).
  • Host lab courses for attending-sponsored conferences (e.g., Vail Hip Symposium, etc.).
  • Host third-party, industry educational labs including managing event logistics (hotel accommodations, catering, educational materials, etc.).
  • Manage and support educational programs and SPRI research activities involving the surgical skills lab.
  • Manage inventory and usage of all surgical products and materials.
  • Provide educational training to staff, students, clinicians, and researchers who utilize the laboratory space, equipment, and data.
  • Secure and manage equipment and supplies needed for each lab/course prior to any surgical skills event at SPRI.
  • Manage and order surgical skills and SPRI research tissue in a timely manner; track and validate all shipments.
  • Initiate surgical skills lab cleaning and repairs as needed.
  • Manage and promote use of personal protection equipment (PPE) by employees and lab participants while working with anatomical specimens.
  • Follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Vail Health Hospital infection control policies and procedures for handling biohazardous and non-biohazardous materials, sharps, and waste segregation.

Technical

  • Accountable for highly detailed and secured identification, recordkeeping, tracking and disposal of all anatomical specimens used at SPRI by utilizing permanent specimen identification methods with unique tracking numbers.
  • Maintain specimen records in a secure environment.
  • Manage and coordinate surgical skills lab events as well as cleaning and breakdown of all equipment after each educational program.
  • Collaboratively facilitate SPRI research initiatives by working closely with SPRI research and The Steadman Clinic staff on selection of tissue, surgical instrumentation/supplies, anatomical/physiological considerations, and product sets.
  • Communicate with the department head and finance team to ensure proper fiscal management of the lab.
  • Explore scientific literature to stay current with latest research and develop, support, and expand professional capabilities.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.
  • Access and use the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information and exercise good professional judgment in a professional manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients or anatomical specimens.

Requirements

Technical

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific discipline required, master’s degree, preferred.
  • Work experience in surgical skills labs and/or the operating room a plus.
  • Managing a surgical skills, anatomy, or similar lab, preferred.
  • Ability to work with multiple levels of management and surgeons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Analytic and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize, manage time, and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve institutional goals.
  • Self-starter with willingness to make decisions independently and solve problems creatively within job scope.
  • Must be adaptable to unexpected changes and possess strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, ability to work independently, and manage time effectively.
  • Knowledge of orthopaedic terminology and human anatomy required.
  • Experience working with cadaveric specimens and knowledge of regulations (OSHA Laboratory Standards) regarding lab and cadaveric usage, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of universal precautions and safety guidelines.

Managerial/Administrative

  • Skilled in effective leadership and collaboration with researchers, attending physicians, and other SPRI staff and guests.
  • Ability to manage facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects simultaneously while working under occasionally stressful conditions.
  • Able to transition from scheduled to strategic responsibilities.
  • Customer service orientation, strong written and verbal communications in English, and people skills.

Supervisor: Research Assistant Interns or others as may arise.

CLASSIFICATION/BENEFITS: Full-time, year-round exempt, onsite position. Hiring range $75,000 - $87,000 per year based on qualifications. Benefits offered: health care, dental, vision, employee assistance program, life, and accidental death, supplemental, FAMLI, STD, LTD, 401(k), paid time off plans for personal, paid sick, holidays and bereavement.
