Position Title - Instructional Designer (ID) & Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator


Department - Academic Affairs: Learning Technologies & Instructional Design (LTID)


Position Summary - The campus-based ID & LMS Administrator is responsible for work in two primary areas: instructional design and LMS administration. Instructional design responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working closely with instructional designers and faculty members in the design, development, and delivery of online, campus-based, and hybrid instruction in undergraduate and graduate courses; guiding instructors in best practices for online curation of course content; verifying the alignment of activities and assessments with course and program learning objectives; ensuring all courses meet university quality standards; designing and facilitating professional learning opportunities for faculty development and training on the use of the LMS (currently Blackboard); and collaboratively managing the review and revision of online courses as part of a regular cycle of assessment for continuous improvement. LMS Administrator responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating efforts with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for the installation and maintenance of integrated learning and instructional software applications within the LMS; managing the link between the Student Information System (SIS) and the LMS system to ensure the creation and accessibility of online course sections each term and semester; assigning instructional and supervisory roles in online courses; and maintaining permissions for all user role within the LMS. The LMS Administrator monitors system updates and/or modifications made by the LMS Provider; provides timely communication to the LTID Director and other relevant parties; and coordinates action steps as warranted. The ID & LMS Administrator serves as a member of the LTID team and supports activities and initiatives as assigned.


Education/Experience - Master’s degree in learning/instructional design or technology, education, curriculum design, , or a directly related field.; plus post-secondary experience in instructional design, educational technology, online education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in an academic setting.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Demonstrated expert-level experience in using and supporting LMS technology, including the technical skills necessary to serve as the LMS administrator (Blackboard Learn Ultra, Ellucian Colleague, Informer preferred).

  • Knowledge of current instructional design models and practices and their applications to higher education in online and campus-based settings.
  • Knowledge of educational assessment theories and techniques, and ability to create and link learning outcomes and objectives to assessments.
  • Knowledge of learning, assessment, and evaluation theories in course design and development for college-aged and non-traditional adult students.
  • Demonstrated success in designing and implementing accessible and inclusive teaching and learning pedagogies supportive of student learning in both campus-based and online settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in course development and training.
  • Ability to manage projects by establishing deliverables and schedules, estimating budgets and human resources, and managing risk.
  • Demonstrated fluency and expertise in using information technologies, online tools, software, and platforms that pertain to course management, office productivity (e.g., Office 365), multimedia, and other resources that support job duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of internal and external constituencies within a diverse community.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks under pressure and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

Physical Requirements - Light work: exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Keyboarding, standing and/or sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal. If necessary, to participate in outdoor activities.


Essential Functions - Serve as the University’s primary LMS Administrator (with position backups in LTID and OIT).

  • Maintain an updated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the LMS Administrator role.
  • Facilitate cross-training of LTID and/or OIT team members in LMS Administrator functions as appropriate, to ensure redundancy and continuity of service.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Learning Technologies and Instructional Design (LTID) team and the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
  • Collaborate with the LTID team, Registrar’s Office, and Academic Program Administrators to create and manage course sections within the LMS each semester and establish appropriate permissions for instructors, supervisors, and administrators according to university policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the LTID team to maintain, deliver, and monitor completion of LMS training for all new faculty each term and semester.
  • Manage the integration of third-party publisher tools and resources, virtual tutoring resources, and other instructional platforms into the LMS.
  • Serve as lead Instructional Designer for assigned schools, providing technical and curriculum support to faculty teaching in multiple modalities and environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve helpdesk tickets from faculty and students within assigned schools and programs, relating to the instructional features and tools of the LMS.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic program administrators to develop, design, and implement online, campus-based, and hybrid courses for both undergraduate and graduate levels using appropriate curriculum and course design principles and technology.
  • Maintain competence and expertise in using University-approved learning technologies and office productivity tools and incorporate them into instruction.
  • Review course materials and activities to ensure consistency with the elements of best practice and quality fundamentals as established by the university.
  • Work with the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Zirkin Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (ZCETL) Faculty Fellows, and other program leaders in the coordination of professional development activities focusing on instructional design and learning technology.
  • Assist with the development of long- and short-range plans, policies, and procedures for the instructional design team.
  • Stay current in best practices, industry standards, emerging technologies, and new opportunities in the field of educational technology and instructional design.
  • Attend and participate in all relevant university and other meetings as expected, requested, or assigned.
  • Participate on committees as assigned.
