The Arc of Essex County is a non-profit organization that provides services and programs for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Our corporate office is located in Livingston, NJ and we have programs throughout Essex County.
The Direct Support Professional provides support, direct care, supervision, and skill training for individuals with specialized needs, including Autism, attending community based day programming. Under the supervision of the Program Manager ensures the welfare of each individual by providing a safe, healthy, professional environment, performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned as needed)
- Maintain the program’s routines and structures to provide a safe, healthy, pleasant, professional environment for each individual.
- Remain up to date on all relevant information related to consumers including ISPs, transition plans, behavioral data, medical changes, etc.
- Ensure safety by providing the level of supervision necessary for each individual as indicated in the Program Description, the individuals’ ISPs, transition plans, school observation, etc.
- Work closely with the Program Manager, Program Supervisor, Behaviorists, agency Nurses, medical care providers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other interested parties to address the individuals’ behavioral and/or medical concerns. This can include observation, reporting, documentation, direct assistance, following formal or informal plans, etc.
- Provide training, supports, and assistance for each individual to enable her/him to complete daily routines in a safe, healthy, productive and dignified manner. This usually includes social, vocational, and recreational skills, hygiene, toileting, etc.
- Encourage independence by providing both the opportunity and the appropriate levels of skill training for the individuals in categories such as community activities, vocational settings, volunteer work, social skills, etc.
- Assist in the planning of the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) and assumes the responsibility for the implementation and documentation of the goals and objectives designated in the ISP. Provide the Program Manager and Program Supervisor with regular reports and information regarding the individuals.
- Ensure the health of the individuals by administering medication, occasionally attending medical appointments, providing prescribed testing or treatments, monitoring for health concerns, documenting/reporting health issues, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma or GED is required. Experience in a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience with extreme behavior in a DD population
- Valid Driver’s License required with a clean driving record.
- Ability to navigate and input data in a computer is required.

After 3 months:
