Position: Camp Counselor

Looking for a fun and rewarding job this summer? Summer@Baldwin Summer Camp is hiring camp counselors to join our fun filled day camp!

Counselors will start June 11, 2025 for 3 days of paid mandatory training. Our camp runs Monday through Friday from June 16 to August 1.

Candidates should be caring, enthusiastic, and have genuine care for children. The most important of all Camp Counselor duties is to ensure campers are safe at all times.

Responsibilities:

Supervision & Safety:

  • Monitor Campers: Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Headcounts & Attendance: Regularly take headcounts during activities, transitions, and at the beginning/end of the day to ensure no camper is left behind.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be aware of emergency procedures (e.g., fire drills, evacuations) and follow protocols in case of accidents or incidents. Know where first aid kits are and how to respond in emergencies.
  • Behavior Management: Maintain a positive and safe environment by enforcing camp rules, managing camper behavior, and providing redirection when necessary.

Activity Leadership & Engagement:

  • Participate In Activities: Participate with campers in a variety of camp activities such as games, arts and crafts, sports, nature hikes, and themed events.
  • Adapt Activities: Modify activities to suit the needs and interests of the campers, ensuring everyone is engaged and having fun.
  • Encourage Participation: Motivate campers to try new activities and participate fully, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.

Camper Support & Relationship Building:

  • Build Rapport: Establish a positive, trusting relationship with campers. Provide emotional support, be a good listener, and be approachable.
  • Individual Attention: Pay attention to campers' emotional, social, and physical needs. Identify campers who might need extra support or encouragement.
  • Provide Guidance: Offer guidance and mentorship, helping campers navigate group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and build new skills.

Communication:

  • Daily Check-ins: Maintain open communication with camp leadership and fellow staff members, sharing information about camper behavior, needs, or any concerns.
  • Camp Director Communication: Report any serious issues, accidents, or incidents to the Camp Director and Assistant Director

Camper Supervision During Transitions:

  • Transitioning Between Activities: Supervise campers as they transition between activities, ensuring that all campers are accounted for and following camp rules.
  • Meals & Breaks: Supervise campers during meal times ensuring they follow camp guidelines and maintain proper hygiene.
  • Carline or Pickup: Occasionally assist with morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up procedures to ensure a smooth and safe process.

Cleanliness & Organization:

  • Maintain Camp Areas: Keep activity areas clean and organized. Make sure campers clean up after themselves and encourage responsibility.
  • Activity Prep: Prepare materials for the day's activities and ensure that all supplies and equipment are ready before activities begin.
  • Lost & Found: Help manage the lost and found, ensuring that misplaced items are returned to campers.

Support Camp Events & Special Days:

  • Camp Spirit: Promote camp spirit by participating in camp-wide events, team-building activities, and maintaining enthusiasm throughout the camp day.

Professional Development & Teamwork:

  • Training & Meetings: Attend staff training sessions, daily or weekly meetings, and ongoing professional development activities.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with other counselors, camp leadership, and staff to ensure that the camp runs smoothly and campers have the best possible experience.
  • Feedback & Improvement: Be open to receiving feedback and take initiative to improve your skills and the camp experience.

Skills & Qualities of a Great Camp Counselor:

  • Patience & Flexibility: Ability to stay calm and flexible in a dynamic, often unpredictable environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal communication to interact with campers, parents, and staff.
  • Leadership & Initiative: A natural leader who can guide and engage campers while managing activities and behavior.
  • Positive Attitude: Always maintain a fun, positive attitude that motivates and encourages campers.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Quick thinking and the ability to handle unexpected situations, conflicts, or emergencies.

Physical Demands:

  • Counselors are often on their feet for long periods, leading outdoor activities, running games, and supervising campers during transitions.
  • The job may require lifting materials, sports equipment, and assisting with campers' physical needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age by June 1st, 2025
  • Ability and enthusiasm towards working with young children
  • Excellent role model for children with high moral standards.
  • Outstanding character and integrity
  • Childcare: 1 year (Preferred)

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • June 16th - August 1st

License/Certification:

  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
