Description
The Sawmill Backup Sawyer is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of sawmill equipment, specifically focusing on the backup duties for the primary sawyer. This role ensures smooth and efficient operations, helping meet production goals, and maintaining safety and quality standards. When the primary sawyer is unavailable, the backup sawyer will step in to handle cutting operations, monitoring machinery, and troubleshooting any issues that arise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support Operations: Assist the lead sawyer in the daily operation of sawmill machinery, including saws, edgers, and other cutting equipment.
- Backup for Primary Sawyer: Fill in as the main sawyer when needed, ensuring the sawmill continues to run smoothly and meets production quotas.
- Monitor Equipment: Ensure that all equipment is functioning correctly, perform routine checks, and report any mechanical issues for repair.
- Maintain Safety Standards: Adhere to all safety protocols, ensuring the work environment is safe for all personnel. Regularly inspect safety equipment.
- Wood Processing: Handle logs, ensure proper alignment, and feed wood into the sawmill machines as needed to achieve the desired cuts and specifications.
- Quality Control: Inspect and assess lumber after cutting for quality, identifying defects or irregularities and making adjustments when necessary.
- Maintenance: Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as cleaning sawdust from equipment, lubricating machinery, and maintaining general cleanliness in the work area.
- Teamwork & Communication: Work closely with other sawmill workers, supervisors, and maintenance teams to resolve any issues promptly and ensure continuous operation.
- Record Keeping: Maintain logs of production, maintenance activities, and any incidents or issues in accordance with company protocols.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience working in a sawmill or manufacturing environment is preferred. Experience as a sawyer or in a similar position will be a plus.
- Physical Stamina: Must be able to lift heavy logs and work in physically demanding conditions for long periods.
- Safety Knowledge: Understanding of safety procedures in the sawmill environment and proper handling of machinery and tools.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform basic troubleshooting.
- Attention to Detail: Careful attention to the quality of lumber and precision in cutting.
- Team Player: Ability to work well with a team and communicate effectively.
- Certifications: Any relevant certifications related to operating sawmill machinery or safety are a plus.
