Overview
The Humane Society of Sarasota County is seeking Veterinary Technicians Tiers 1 and Tier 2 to join the team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal care and possess a background in the veterinary field. Additional compensation available for experienced credentialed Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT)

Hours:

Both positions have 40hr work schedules and can be either an 8 or 10-hour day based on scheduling needs.

Tier 1 Technician Overview: Starting pay from $19:00hr

The Technician reports directly to the section managers. The Tier 1 Veterinary Technician position provides medical care and treatment for cats and dogs. This includes routine vaccinations, diagnostic testing, patient treatments, and assisting the DVM’s in surgery. Candidates for this position must have 1 year of prior experience working as a veterinary assistant or as a technician, preferably in an animal shelter environment.

Responsibilities

  • Restrain animals as needed.
  • Assist with surgical prep, monitoring, and recovery
  • Perform Digital Radiographs
  • Perform dental cleanings on cats and dogs
  • Administer vaccinations
  • Perform in-house diagnostic testing
  • Assist with medical rounds as needed.
  • Create, update, and maintain patient medical records.
  • Keep work areas organized and stocked with medical supplies needed to perform daily functions.
  • Clean and disinfect cages, treatment areas, and rooms as needed.

Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • One year of experience in a Veterinary setting

Technician Tier 2 Position Overview: Starting pay from $21.00hr

Reports directly to the section managers. The Tier 2 Veterinary Technician plays a pivotal role in providing elevated support to the DVMs in the Veterinary Services department. This elevated position is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of care are provided and met for all patients under the supervision of HSSC. Responsibilities can include new hire training, maintaining drug logbooks for regulatory compliance, and optimizing surgical workflow. The position ensures efficiency in all procedures and services throughout the entire medical department.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records and adherence to protocols for controlled substances, including logging and inventory management.
  • Facilitate and maintain efficient surgical flow, assisting veterinarians during procedures with preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care.
  • Ensure proper setup, operation, and maintenance of surgical equipment to guarantee optimal functionality and safety.
  • Coordinate patient care plans, maintain cleanliness in medical areas, and contribute to a collaborative and supportive working environment.
  • Maintain medical equipment in both medical departments
  • Perform x-rays and dental cleanings on cats and dogs.
  • Calculate and administer medication and injections (IV, SQ, IM)
  • Perform in-house diagnostic testing.
  • Create, update, and maintain patient medical records.
  • Administer vaccinations
  • Clean and disinfect cages, treatment areas, and rooms as needed.
  • Implant Microchips under the guidance of the Veterinarian.
  • Restrain animals as needed.
  • Perform Digital Radiographs.
  • Provide excellent overall patient experience.

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Three years of experience as a veterinary technician.
  • Humane euthanasia certification, or willingness to become certified.
  • Ability and willingness to become Fear Free Certified within 60 days of hire.
  • All internal promotions require completion of all skill sets for HSSC Tech Tier 1

Skills Needed

  • Knowledgeable in core veterinary medicine.
  • Able to perform dental radiographs as needed.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required.
  • Safe and gentle animal handling and restraint of dogs and cats.
  • Ability to identify signs of animal illness, diseases, and injuries.
  • Be emotionally capable of dealing with euthanasia when necessary.
  • Possess a clear understanding of shelter diseases, shelter medicine, and quarantine protocols.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, Outlook, and ability to learn shelter software products.
  • Proficiency with using and maintaining veterinary medical equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in Pet First Aid and CPR

Job Type: Full-time
