Description

Communications Manager – The Shelter for Abused Women & Children

Organization: The Shelter for Abused Women & Children 

Location: Naples Shelter

Reports to: Chief Development Officer  Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt (Annual Salary)

Direct Reports: N/A

Salary: Determined based on experience, local wages, and nonprofit industry rates.

This is a fully in-person position with no opportunities for remote work.

 

 The Impact of This Position:

This position is critical in enhancing The Shelter's visibility and influence across community and media channels. By leading communications and public relations efforts, this role ensures consistent and impactful branding for The Shelter and its programs, including the Options Thrift Shoppe. With strategic marketing, social media engagement, and media relations, the position aims to expand The Shelter's presence locally and nationally, foster community support, and strengthen fundraising efforts. This role is ideal for a communications professional dedicated to making a meaningful impact in public awareness, fundraising, and advocacy for The Shelter’s vital mission; to prevent, protect, and prevail against domestic violence and human trafficking.

 

Non-Negotiables

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, English, and/or equivalent experience in the nonprofit sector, media relations, development, fundraising, and social media management
  • Demonstrated success working with media (TV, radio, print, internet), including serving as agency spokesperson
  • Minimum of five years in professional public/media relations
  • Minimum of three years in graphic design/layout experience (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Minimum of two years in event planning and implementation/fundraising experience

What You’ll Do:

  • Conceptualize, create, and distribute collateral materials, including impact reports, event invites, event programs, brochures, flyers, and quarterly reports.
  • Develop and execute public relations, marketing, and advertising strategies for The Shelter resale store, Shelter programs and services, and all fundraising and awareness-raising events.
  • Develop and maintain key media contacts and relationships; serve as a liaison with media outlets, including newspapers, magazines, radio, online, and television news channels.
  • Develop marketing materials and advertising for The Shelter Options Shoppe, Shelter programs and services, and Shelter events; review materials for external events.
  • Direct and implement a public relations program to enhance The Shelter's brand (including The Shelter Options Shoppe, staff, volunteers, programs, and services) through community relations, marketing, and social media at local, state, and national levels.
  • Ensure consistency in brand colors, fonts, and wording across all materials representing The Shelter.
  • Expand and maintain media lists at local, state, and national levels.
  • Implement basic website updates, such as posting blogs, newsletters, media pieces, events, and impact reports; update website copy and graphics.
  • Order informational and communication supplies, such as envelopes, stationery, notepads, brochures, and promotional items.
  • Oversee the development of the annual impact report, including copywriting, layout, theme, and execution.
  • Provide support to the development team and associated activities as needed.
  • Research, develop, and implement The Shelter's online/social media strategy in collaboration with senior staff, utilizing platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Research, write, edit, and distribute media releases, media alerts, newsletters, Letters to the Editor, donor thank-you letters, social media posts, media kits, news blogs, and Options online emails.

  • Proficiency in CS/Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator; website software; Microsoft Office, InDesign, Photoshop, Wordpress, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Dropbox, Constant Contact, and Canva
  • Public speaking/professional training experience
  • Strong social media skills: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn
