A Day in the Life of an Engineering Intern at Toole Design
As an Intern, you will not be fetching coffee or sorting mail - we want you here for real, meaningful work. You'll spend 8 to 12 weeks working with engineers, planners, and landscape architects on a variety of projects. All internships are paid positions.
Your work may include helping to develop concepts and graphics for new active transportation facilities, preparing construction details and supporting documentation for construction documents and final design packages, preparing materials for public meetings, participating in field work, and participating in project discussions and workshops to bring new ideas to the communities in which we work. Toole Design is a truly inter-disciplinary firm, so our engineers and planners work side-by-side to ensure that our projects are safe for all users, easily constructible, and fit in the community context.
We'll offer you the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types and work products, company-wide trainings on core skills and best practices, and career mentorship from the best in the business. You'll get the opportunity to attend key project meetings and site visits; and grow your skills with design programs like MicroStation, AutoCAD and BlueBeam; and analysis programs like Synchro. Qualifications Of An Engineering Intern At Toole Design
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is our corporate headquarters. We are conveniently located just outside of Washington DC in downtown Silver Spring, close to regional trails and networks on on-street bike infrastructure two blocks from the Silver Spring Metrorail/MARC Station and bus depot. Our beautiful 8th floor suite offers stunning views of DC and surrounding Montgomery County. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.

Qualifications Of An Engineering Intern At Toole Design
- Undergraduate: Current enrollment as a third year or higher in a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related program field
- Master's: Current or upcoming enrollment in a Master of Science in Civil Engineering or related program field
- Recent graduate: Degree in a related field or demonstrated passion for the field
- Ability to quickly pick up new concepts, skills, and programs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- MicroStation or AutoCAD experience or willingness to learn
- Experience in an office environment a plus
- You are passionate about active transportation in cities, suburbs and rural areas
- You want to learn and are willing to take on new tasks
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment and care about the details
- You ask questions when you need help and take ownership of your work when you've gotten the answer
