Building Inspector/Plans Examiner

Are you passionate about construction, safety, and community development? The Town of Vail is looking for a Building Inspector/Plans Examiner to join our dynamic team! The Building Inspector/Plans Examiner performs code compliance inspections for all new construction, renovation, alteration, addition and repair projects in the community. Additionally, the position performs plan reviews to ensure proper code compliance is achieved. The position ensures that minimum health and safety standards are followed to protect resident and visitor occupants in all buildings within the Town of Vail.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the general public at the Community Development counter, on the phone and through electronic communication to provide pertinent information and facilitate the permitting, plan review and inspection processes.
- Interprets the building codes adopted by the town to ensure intent and compliance are met.
- Performs building, plumbing, mechanical and related inspections of commercial and residential construction projects to ensure code compliance.
- Performs commercial and residential plan reviews to verify that drawings for new construction, renovations, alterations, additions and repairs are code compliant, as needed.
- Investigates complaints and citizen requests on construction and posts Stop Work Orders and Dangerous Building notices, as required.
- Identifies potentially unsafe or illegal conditions at construction sites and reports findings to the Chief Building Official.
- Schedules all the daily inspection requests on active building, planning, and public works permits.
- Supports the team-driven concepts of the division and department and willingly participates in team functions, meetings and activities.
- Serves the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
- Performs job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills / Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing including the use of email, and the ability to prepare and present documents pertaining to construction and code related issues.
- Solid knowledge of accepted construction industry standards and procedures.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and highly technical documents relating to building codes, construction specifications, and standards.
- Excellent interpersonal skills that include the ability to be team-oriented establish effective working relationships and display exemplary customer service skills.
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to apply the building code requirements to actual construction site conditions.
- Thorough working knowledge of the International Code Council code versions and the adopted Town of Vail ordinances and regulations.
- In-depth understanding of permit and inspection processes and procedures and the use of the MAGNET and ProjectDox (or other) permitting and plan review software.
Education, Experience and Certificates
- High school diploma and four (4) years experience in code enforcement/compliance, construction, project management, or a closely related technical field.
- Certification as Building Inspector, Plumbing Inspector and Mechanical Inspector through the International Code Council required, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
- Certification as Building Plans Examiner through the International Code Council preferred, or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
- Electrical Journey Man’s or Master’s license through the State of Colorado preferred.
- Hold and maintain a valid CO driver’s license.
