What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Technician position at Travera?
Description:
Travera is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to help us develop a new strategy for personalized medicine in cancer. Leveraging a novel microfluidic platform for single-cell mass and growth measurements, we are working on the development of a universal, functional biomarker for cancer drug susceptibility. Together with clinical partners at the top cancer institutes in the United States, we are conducting clinical studies applying our biomarker to different malignancies. The applicant will be responsible for conducting experiments, platform operation and troubleshooting, training new platform users, sample processing, complementary assays (e.g. flow cytometry), cell culture, data analysis in R, and compiling data reports or other scientific communications. Beyond these duties, creativity and flexibility to facilitate day-to-day operations would be expected. A successful candidate will have a foundation in either the biological sciences, bioengineering or related fields, and would preferably be comfortable with advanced instrumentation platforms (e.g. flow cytometry).
Qualifications:
· MS or BA/BS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields (e.g. clinical chemistry, etc…).
· 2-5 years of experience in scientific or medical research setting is required. Experience can be in industry or academic setting.
· ≥1 year of post-graduate professional experience is required.
· Foundation in core concepts of the biological sciences or bioengineering
· Strong time management and communication skills
· Flexible, motivated team player with an eagerness to learn new skills and the ability to work independently and effectively in a highly dynamic environment
· ≥1 year experience with tissue culture and biological research techniques applied to primary tissues
· Preferred: Experience with flow cytometry, and/or novel instrumentation
Why Travera?:
We are a small team of highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists who are dedicated to contributing to the future of personalized medicine. We come from diverse background of expertise, spanning biology to engineering, and are excited to be applying the measurement of fundamental biophysical properties like mass and cell growth to the hard problem of cancer treatment. Approaches to personalize medicine today hinge largely on the use of genetic markers for drug susceptibility, however, few patients benefit from these techniques and most drugs lack biomarkers to guide their use. Our approach is to use biomarkers like single-cell mass and growth, which integrate the upstream molecular and genetic considerations that determine sensitivity to drugs, to directly predict a patient’s response to drugs. This type of “functional” assay, potentially in combination with genetic biomarkers, has the ability to help clinician’s direct patient care, extend the survival of those patients, and help drugs be developed faster and used more accurately. Towards this goal, we interface regularly with expert clinicians, scientists, and engineers at the premier research entities in the area.
We invite you to explore our website and the foundational publications of our approach to see how we aim to improve the healthcare landscape moving forward.
