Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Responsible for building a well-trained team which is passionate about safety, quality, efficiency, and company success
· Supports the goals and objectives of the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance.
- Operates in the role of the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance in their absence.
- Develop and train staff in setting quality assurance standards, procedures and meeting daily expectations.
- Monitor, review and correct all performance issues with team members to ensure a safe and productive work environment through performance management, daily feedback, and formal performance evaluations.
- Certified PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual)
- Document testing procedures, methodologies, or criteria.
- Maintain HACCP certification.
- Develop, implement and conduct training for the Standard Operation Procedures for Quality Assurance.
- Maintain the Hold Program including but not limited to: review of hold product for disposition, release of hold product, maintain all hold records and oversee rework activities related to the hold program.
- Accountable for verifying that all Sanitation activities are of sound design, are performed as intended, and are properly documented – thus ensuring the facility is being cleaned properly to maintain an environment that will produce safe quality food.
· Meet or exceed company expectations for production performance to maximize sales
- Monitor performance of quality assurance systems to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
- Oversee the quality testing and inspection procedures of all team members engaged in testing activities.
- Update all quality systems as required, such as: HACCP, Recall Plan, GMP's, Pre-Op inspections, Supplier Development, Raw and Finished Product specifications, Food Security, Glass and Brittle Plastic Policy, Rework Policy, Hold Program, Customer Complaint Program, Allergen Control, etc.
- Ensure compliance with the State Department of Agriculture, FDA regulations and the SQF code.
- Interface with all food safety/compliance agencies. Responsible for non-compliance responses and corrective actions.
- Ensure up to date customer specifications and internal specs. Establish and maintain a process to ensure specs are easily available.
- Monitor and contribute to new food safety regulations, interfacing with food safety personnel and regulatory/compliance agencies by attending symposiums, conferences, etc.,
- Monitor food safety trends to stay ahead of customer requirements.
- Develop and maintain calibration program for all lab and food safety related equipment as part of the food safety plan/system.
- Ability to develop a written CAPA.
· Properly utilize labor resources to improve efficiency, minimize labor expense and reduce waste.
· Develop and implement new team member orientation materials which support food safety and quality assurance standards.
- Demonstrate commitment to safety by adhering to all PPE and personal and plant safety regulations and requiring others to do so.
- Maintains and updates the GMP Program.
- Acts as a liaison between production and the Management Team with production food safety issues.
- Responsible for ensuring COA's are received and meet specification requirements.
- Assist in development of new finished goods designs to include die lines, artwork, ingredient statements and nutritionals to ensure all regulatory and customer requirements are met.
- Conduct monthly inspections of plant operations and partner with process owners to correct any deficiencies.
· Provide outstanding customer service to our partners.
· Support and maintenance of the Approved Supplier Program.
· Maintain and update all data in the Customer Quality Systems Portals where required.
· Manage Organic, Kosher and Gluten Free certifications and in doing so:
· Develop and implement all systems relating to identity preserved food category.
· Serves as primary contact to the GFCO for Gluten Free Certification, Clemson University for Organic Certification, and the OU for Kosher certification.
· Implements corrective actions as required based on auditing data.
· Supervises Identity Preserved production, including but not limited to gluten free and organic.
· Creation of policies and procedures related to identity preserved foods including but not limited to quality procedures and testing procedures to ensure compliance to the identity.
Other Responsibilities and Skills Needed:
· Participates in new product development and rollouts.
· Assist in hiring, training, and developing of all team members with regards to quality assurance.
· Serve as a troubleshooting and escalation resource to engineering, operations, customer support, suppliers, and the customer.
· Support internal/external quality auditors to ensure that products and processes are compliant.
· Assist in the maintenance of the Bill of Materials for accuracy.
· Secondary approval of all formula changes.
· Familiar with the SQF Code for the scope of certification
· Responsible for verifying food safety fundamentals and food safety plan (including CCPs)
· Uphold the integrity of the SQF Systems
· Responsible for communicating to relevant personnel all information for effective implementation and maintenance
· Perform other duties as required and assigned.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
· Ability to read, write, and intermediate mathematical skills are required.
· Must be willing to work weekends and overtime when needed.
· Intermediate computer skills – ability to learn specific software programs (Plex) to access paperwork, program equipment for running specific products, produce labels, etc.
· Moderate mechanical aptitude is needed
Physical and Safety Requirements
· Complies with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) and all other food safety requirements
· Complies with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) requirements
· Reports any food safety problems or potentially unsafe practices/conditions to senior management as required.
· Constant walking and standing on hard concrete service.
· Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, pushing, lifting, and climbing.
· Position will require working in very hot or cold conditions.
· Other conditions include flour dust, wet floors, occasional smoke, and fumes if product burns.
*This position is responsible for mitigating food safety risk by driving food safety strategy and standardization across the production facility. Responsible for overseeing the implementation of all aspects of the food safety program including, but not limited to, policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and training. Will ensure that all staff are informed of their food safety and regulatory responsibilities, are aware of their role in meeting the requirements of the SQF Food Safety Code for Manufacturing and are informed of their responsibility to report food safety problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.
