Position: GED Spanish Instructor (Evening Shift)
Position Summary:
Union Settlement Adult Education is seeking a Spanish GED Instructor (Evenings)to provide in-person support for GED Spanish certification. The Spanish GED Instructor reports to the Adult Education Director and has the overall responsibility of the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully-integrated system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that all agency staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed – internal or external to the agency – regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system.
The Spanish GED Instructor (Evenings) is responsible for providing individual and group instruction to adult learners studying to obtain their High School Equivalency (HSE) and those Union Settlement Adult Education participants seeking to enhance their skills through Adult Basic Education (ABE). This role assesses the educational needs of each Union Settlement Adult Education participant who expresses an interest in pursuing education as part of their career advancement goals. It also, develops and implements program curriculum to be delivered via group instruction in-person format. The Spanish GED Instructor (Evenings)monitors participant progress, communicating regularly across teams and providing direct and timely feedback to participants with a trauma-informed approach. This role also works closely with Union Settlement Adult Education’s Community Resource Coordinators to support participants as they advance into postsecondary educational and training opportunities. Union Settlement Adult Education is seeking an individual with strong content knowledge in adult education with the ability to teach a diverse group of adult learners with varying skillsets, abilities, and employment goals.Responsibilities:
- Provide ABE instruction that will help them increase to one NRS level (transition to an HSE level)
- Provide HSE instruction to adult students, ages 18 & up, to help them obtain the necessary skills to be able to read, write, and compute proficiently pass the GED HSE exam.

Instruct in the program in a manner that supports student retention consistent with the Adult Learning Common Core Standards while assisting students in meeting education goals. These duties will include the following:
- Deliver appropriate ABE/HSE instruction
- Responsible for maintaining 80% average daily attendance of student roster
- Conducts follow-up calls to students who are absent for two consecutive days
- Develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate instructional programs
- Establish and maintain a daily schedule of instruction
- Provide group instruction as scheduled by the agency
- Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes as requested by funders
Provide indirect services to students:
- Maintain documentation of evaluation, ongoing instructional programs, student progress, and communications
- Prepare reports and collect data as requested by the Director of Education and required by private and public funders
- Attend related meetings relevant to program and students
- Consult counselors, administrators, and co-workers regarding HSE program
- Present and interpret program to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings, if necessary
- Consult with education and employment counselor to develop and maintain student’s educational and employment plan
- Provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment
- Adhere to curriculum
- Teach multiple subjects using a variety of methodologies, ranging from individualized instruction to small groups to whole group lessons
- Integrate technology into instruction and keep up to date on instructional technology
- Seek to create a learning environment that is successful to helping students reach their personal, academic, and professional goals
Professional Development:
- Attend and participate in department staff meetings as required
- Participate in professional development/in-service per year as required by funder
- Participate in the supervision/evaluation process
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in one or more of the following areas: Education, Adult Education, Special Education, Math, English, Science
- Current New York State Adult education teacher certification preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching to immigrant communities
- Bilingual English and Spanish Required (be able to read, write, and speak in both languages proficiently.)
- Strong background in teaching reading and writing and/or math.
- Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners with diverse needs, particularly economically disadvantaged backgrounds and/or historically underserved populations
- Knowledge of High School Equivalency (HSE) exams in the State of New York; Adult Basic Education Authorization, Required
- Experience working with students of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Knowledge of Adult Learning Theory
- Knowledge of ABE, pre-HSE, and/or HSE curriculum, testing procedures, and requirements
- Experience with education assessment tools – experience with TABE 11/12
