Postdoctoral Research Associate
Computational Many-body Physics
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, United States
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville to begin in early 2025. The successful applicant will work as part of a multi-investigator project led by Prof. Steven Johnston and in collaboration with Profs. Adrian Del Maestro (UTK), Cristian Batista (UTK), Adrian Feiguin (Northeastern), and as well as our collaborators at Brookhaven, Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Labs. The members of this project are leveraging advanced computational methods, including techniques in machine learning and data science, to model strongly correlated quantum materials with a strong connection to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments.
Qualifications
Applicants should have completed all requirements for a PhD in physics or a closely related field no later than December 31, 2024. Prior experience in the areas of condensed matter physics and theory of x-ray scattering is necessary with expertise in one or more of the following areas will be strongly preferred: classical and quantum computational many-body techniques (e.g., density matrix renormalization group, classical and quantum Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, and exact diagonalization), high-performance computing, theoretical spectroscopy, or methods in machine learning and data science.
The Department has an exemplary research record, with eight professors earning NSF CAREER awards since 2012, eight professors among the world’s top two percent of physicists based on citation count, the award of the prestigious American Physical Society 2021 Bonner Prize, eleven APS Fellows, and four AAAS Fellows. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is Tennessee’s flagship state research institution, a campus of choice for outstanding undergraduates and a premier graduate institution with a number of nationally and internationally ranked programs and with national and international leadership in numerous fields.
The University’s proximity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory provides an excellent setting for the education and training of the next generation of scientists, and greatly facilitates research collaborations with the national lab. The University is in a scenic area close to Smoky Mountains National Park. Further information regarding this position can be obtained by contacting Prof. Steven Johnston at sjohn145@utk.edu.
