Job Description


Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) is located in historic Abingdon, VA and proudly serves the residents of Washington County, western Smyth County, and the city of Bristol, VA. The College offers comprehensive instruction to more than 3,000 students annually, awarding associate degrees, certificates, career studies certificates, and workforce credentials. VHCC is fortunate to have support from regional partners in order to offer Promise Programs which provide two years of free college education for regional high school graduates, applying towards degrees, credentials, and certificates at VHCC.
To facilitate those endeavors, VHCC is currently seeking a Financial Aid Specialist who will work entirely with Promise Program students. Reporting directly to the Financial Aid Director, this position will communicate information regarding VHCC’s Promise Programs to students, parents, and other stakeholders. Duties include collection and verification of student information and accounting documentation, including grants, scholarships, and other documentation as required by Promise Programs. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the compilation of student data and reports related to VHCC’s Promise Programs.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Identify eligible students for Promise programs;
  • Conduct outreach via phone, text, or email;
  • Assist in the development and updates of Promise Program Applications;
  • Process incoming Promise applications and determine student eligibility;
  • Apply appropriate funding in SIS;
  • Verify recipient requirements are being met throughout the program;
  • Meet with Promise Partners to update qualifications, as needed;
  • Produce and present reports on Promise Programs to relevant parties;
  • Attend outreach events relevant to Promise Programs;
  • Meet with VHCC constituents regarding Promise Programs;
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Financial Aid regarding Promise Programs;

This position is grant-funded and includes a one-year probationary period for all new hires and transfers. Please note that it is NOT a remote position.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution;
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Willingness to learn and utilize computer systems vital to the role, including the use of Salesforce and SIS (training will be provided);


Additional Considerations
  • Experience working with financial aid programs;
  • Experience working in a community college setting.
