General statement of duties:
Responsible to the Recreation and Aquatics Coordinator(R&AC) and Assistant Manager. Responsible for educating and informing patrons of the purpose and need to read all rules and regulations and to follow their instructions when using the pool facilities.
Definition of work:
- Performs specialized work as it pertains to public safety and recreational work in enforcing rules, regulations and preventing injuries at WCPRD aquatic facilities.
- Ensures safety of patrons through education of safe aquatic practices.
- Enforces pool rules and regulations.
- Consistently practices prevention and minimizes or eliminates hazardous situations.
- Maintains positive communication with general public.
- Maintains order and discipline in pool, bathhouses, and surrounding areas.
- Rescues swimmers in distress; applies first aid and resuscitation as needed.
- Reports any problems/disturbances to immediate on duty supervisor.
- Completes all duties as assigned with the general public.
- Represent WCPRD in a professional manner.
- Performs miscellaneous cleaning and organizing tasks.
- Attends two (2) in service training sessions and emergency standard operation procedure training sessions per month.
Examples of work:
- Prevents accidents and minimizes or eliminates hazardous situations.
- Responds quickly to all emergency situations in the water.
- Administers first aid needed by the victim of an accident.
- Communicates with other lifeguards and pool staff the need for additional assistance is necessary.
- Sets an example for pool users in the use of proper conduct.
- Educates and informs patrons of the purpose and need for rules and regulations.
- Completes all required records and reports on schedule and submits to the proper person.
- Maintains standard of cleanliness of pool areas, including parking lot.
- Reports definite or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Handles lost and found articles under proper procedures.
- Demonstrates sound communication skills and judgement.
- Thorough knowledge of pool operations, including rotations and whistle communications.
- Thorough knowledge of aquatics safety principles.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
- Renders first aid and artificial respiration when necessary.
- Keeps physically fit, mentally alert, and ready to meet any emergency.
- Notes, takes action, or notifies the R&AC/Assistant Manager/Head Guard of any acts or procedures that might endanger or create disharmony among the pool patrons or staff.
- Uses the whistle sparingly, lest they become too common to attract attentions.
- Responsible for keeping debris from the pool surface and bottom, including drains in pool bottom, skimmers, and decks.
- Brushes, vacuums, and chlorinates the pool on a schedule set by the (R&AC) or Assistant Manager.
- Responsible for making one deck walk and one bathhouse check on every half-hour break.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Minimum valid certification in American Red Cross Basic Lifeguard Training
- Minimum certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid or equivalent.
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- Level I: This position is the entry lifeguard position.
- Level II: A minimum of one year/season experience in lifeguarding.
- Level III: A minimum of two year/season experience in lifeguarding.
- Level III : A minimum of three years/seasons experience in lifeguarding.
