GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Head Custodian under the general direction of the Director of Buildings and Grounds/Custodian Supervisor will effectively supervise a small staff, carry out administrative tasks and be responsible using established practices and procedures for daily, school recess and summer cleaning, security, conservation of utilities and grounds work, including snow removal. Be responsible for physical plant, including the operation and minor maintenance of all building systems such as lighting, plumbing, electrical, heat and ventilation in a public school building. Help ensure that assigned building and grounds meet established departmental standards.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Cleans and maintains, by established standards, designated spaces, equipment, etc. by performing specific duties such as: vacuuming, dry and wet mopping, wet dusting, washing and disinfecting as well as removal of spots/stains from surfaces and floors, cleaning glass, applying floor-finish and other related floor-care duties.
- Request, proportion and use chemicals, equipment and other supplies by the custodial program and staff.
- Collect and dispose of garbage and other waste per district guidelines.
- To move or assist in moving furniture and equipment within assigned area.
- Grounds work to surrounding areas including such duties as: raking, sweeping, shoveling, snow removal, maintaining shrubs, trees and other vegetation.
- To do minor repair work on buildings or equipment, or to assist maintenance staff when necessary.
- Maintain building and grounds security and alert proper authorities in case of emergency.
- Assist staff, students and visiting public utilizing facilities (set-up, clean-up), where necessary.
- Inter-departmental communication, including night shift instructions and maintenance of files, evaluations, requisitions, records and generation of reports as required.
- Daily inspection of the entire plant and operation of its systems, taking appropriate actions to insure its operation.
- Responsible for snow removal outside of regular work hours.
- Reviews weekly timecards of entire staff within the building for clarification and accuracy.
- Other related duties as required by the Director/Supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment used in public school buildings and surrounding grounds, to include, but not limited to: commercial floor-machines, vacuums, cleaning carts, lawn mowers, trimmers, ladders, hand trucks and snow blowers; must have a fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems (switches and breakers),as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; the ability to readily understand, carry out and assign directions, both oral and written; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form; the ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the community; manual dexterity; supervisory experience preferred and the ability to perform duties with an awareness of school department requirements and policies. New hires must pass a pre-employment physical.
EDUCATION:
Such as may be gained through graduation from a senior high school or equivalent (GED). One year related experience preferred.
