What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pathology Support Assistant position at Waterbury Hospital?
SCOPE OF POSITION:
Perform a variety of shipping and receiving of specimen slide packs, word processing, as well as various office and secretarial functions to assist Pathologists in maintaining an efficient unit.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Retrieve and prepare slides and blocks for shipment for consultation to appropriate facilities as directed by a pathologist. Obtain and packages histology specimens and/or slides. Send/mail them to other facilities for consultation requested by our pathologists, physicians, patients, attorney’s offices (which have to be presented to Risk Management) or requested by another laboratory.)
- Generate necessary paper work for slide request; along with a send-out letter, the report, and demographic for billing information. Enter information into the Cerner system on each slide along with the name of the requesting person/facility. Track and monitor the return of specimens and follow up as necessary.
- Perform routine office functions, including telephone inquires for laboratory test and pathology reports, filing, duplicating, etc. Scans surgical pathology consults and any other correspondence that is applicable to a surgical pathology report. Help with Gen Lab scanning as needed and time allows.
- Handle calls and questions concerning autopsies. Receive death chart from bed control, notify Pathologist, and call Yale for diener services along with the Waterbury Hospital’s diener.
- Keep current on advances in Laboratory Services. Participate in and share continuing education to maintain professional development and competency for patient population served including: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult patients.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
- High School diploma. Specialized secretarial training preferred.
- At least one (1) year secretarial experience.
- Medical Terminology experience a plus.
- Ability to interact with internal as well as external customers with tact and confidentiality.
