Thermal tolerance limits are among the key determinants of species’ distributions, and for invasive species in particular, tolerances to extreme temperatures may explain part of their success in invading and establishing in new areas. Despite this relevance, current measures of thermal tolerances often ignore the important relationship between duration and intensity of thermal stress. Likewise, most models relating climatic conditions to organismal/population responses to thermal extremes does not adequately reflect the microclimatic environment experienced by smaller organisms.

The primary focus will be on investigating thermal tolerance limits across different taxa including invasive insects and plants, particularly exploring the relationship between the duration and intensity of thermal stress exposure as described by the Thermal Death Time model. The postdoc will investigate how mechanisms of thermal acclimation and repair of thermal injury, can be integrated with thermal tolerance measures under fluctuating temperatures across permissive and stressful temperatures. This involves experimental work with model and non-model organisms, including insects and/or plants suitable for testing hypotheses relating to thermal stress responses. Additionally, the postdoc will also be developing methods for integrating thermal tolerance measures with microclimate data from field sites and climate models to better understand and predict shifts in species distributions and seasonal population dynamics.

The position is part of a larger project carried out in collaboration with Rennes University and Tours University, both in France, where field work can be carried out, as well as Aarhus University, Denmark. The experimental work will be carried out at Aalborg University. Limited teaching within the area can be expected.

The postdoc will become part of a growing research group working broadly within eco-physiology, community ecology and ecological modelling relating to global changes.

Competences of the ideal applicant:

• A PhD in evolutionary ecology, eco-physiology, or related fields
• Solid publication record with a clear focus on thermal biology of ectotherm animals and/or plants.
• Experience relating to thermal tolerance limits and responses to environmental stress
• Excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in R(or equivalent).
• Experience with thermal tolerance assays, physiological methods(plant or animal-specific), and geospatial analyses is an advantage.
• Familiarity with the Thermal Death Time modelling framework is appreciated but not mandatory.

The applicant must be highly motivated and able to work systematically and independently, using problem-solving skills and critical thinking, in an interdisciplinary research environment. Excellent oral and written English language skills are a requirement, as well as a cooperative personality and good communication skills. Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
