The Research Training Group (RTG) 3068, Climate-Informed Engineering, at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), focuses on interdisciplinary research in climate-informed sustainable resource management and environmental engineering. RTG 3068 provides an exceptional research environment at TUHH in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health. In this context, we have established a five-year postdoctoral researcher position to serve as a vital link between TUHH and MPI-M. This researcher will conduct high-resolution climate simulations critical to all RTG projects. Using MPI-M’s ICON-Sapphire model, they will simulate the components of the Earth system and their interactions at kilometer and sub-km scale to support various research projects on climate-informed engineering within the RTG. Additionally, the postdoctoral researcher will conduct cutting-edge research on the interaction between climate and soil erosion within the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics, in collaboration with MPI-M. This research will examine how human activities and climate influence soil erosion and and its consequences, utilizing global simulations that resolve storms and their associated wind and precipitation patterns based on high-resolution climate model outputs.

YOUR TASKS

  • Working with the ICON-Sapphire model to simulate the components of the Earth system and their interactions at kilometer and sub-km scale
  • Active collaboration and exchanges with the PhD candidates at the RTG on Climate-informed Engineering
  • Utilize big data analytics, satellite remote sensing, and high resolution climate data to investigate soil erosion globally under different conditions
  • Publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences
  • Collaborate with other institutes and universities; Assist with other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Institute

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies preferable with PhD, in particular in the subject*s geoscience, environmental engineering, hydrology, fluid mechanics or related engineering disciplines.

Required Knowledge And Personal Skills

  • Proven experience in handling output from kilometer-scale climate simulations, preferably using MPI-M’s ICON-Sapphire model
  • Proven experience in large-scale modeling, big data analytics, GIS, and satellite remote sensing
  • Experience with AI algorithms and machine learning techniques for environmental modeling would be an important asset
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both oral and written, B2/C1 GER)

OUR OFFER

  • a job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment
