Biodiversity and Citizen Science

The job

The UFZ Department Biodiversity and People is part of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. The center is located in Leipzig and is operated as a consortium of the University of Leipzig together with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ. It also receives support from the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association and the Free State of Saxony.

Your tasks

Quantitative analyses, empirical work and conceptual synthesis in the fields of biodiversity and biodiversity restoration, citizen science and links to human health

Collaboration with the ongoing citizen science projects in the department, such as FLOW on freshwater monitoring and VielFalterGarten/ Urban Nature Plans UNP on butterflies and urban ecology

Application of statistical approaches to data integration and systematic evaluation of heterogeneous biodiversity and health data

Active collaboration with natural history societies, museums, state agencies, citizen science projects and other stakeholders at local, national and international level

Attraction of third-party project funding

Supervision of BSc and MSc students

Publication of results in international peer reviewed journals and presentation at conferences

Your profile

Completed MSc, and ideally PhD in biology, ecology or related fields with a clear focus on biodiversity with experience in quantitative analysis and/or spatial data management

Experience in interdisciplinary research; a publication record in the fields of biodiversity or citizen science desirable

Particular strengths in quantitative, statistical biodiversity analyses

Experience in database management, scientific programming (R) and data visualization essential

Experience in transdisciplinary collaboration with stakeholders from NGOs, natural history societies, museums and public agencies as well as in organizing workshops and conducting surveys

Experience in third-party project acquisition, project management and successful implementation desirable

Excellent team player, friendly and professional demeanor

Fluency in spoken and written English and German

Attracted by the opportunity to develop a scientific research program in our department

Willingness to travel for fieldwork
