Position Details: Work Shift: Varied Shift (United States of America) Scheduled Weekly Hours: 0 Department: Emergency Medicine Overview of Position: Supports physician in providing health care services to patients. Provides a broad range of medical and/or surgical services that would otherwise be performed by the physician. The physician assistant is supervised by a licensed physician (as required by law) who maintains overall responsibility for their performance. ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. Performs physical examination, including audiometry screening, routine visual screening and pelvic, and cardiac examinations when indicated. 2. Assesses patients and develops and implements treatment plans for patients. 3. Obtains comprehensive patient histories. 4. Orders and/or performs routine diagnostic procedures as indicated. 5. Identifies normal and abnormal finding on histories, physical examinations and commonly performed diagnostic studies. 6. Monitors the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. 7. Carries out or relays the supervising physician’s orders for the administration of medication, to the extent allowed by law. 8. Provides patient education. 9. Institutes and changes orders on patients’ charts. 10. Performs wound care management as indicated, suturing minor lacerations and removing the sutures, incision and drainage of uncomplicated superficial abscesses, removal of superficial foreign bodies. 11. Administers intravenous fluids. 12. Makes appropriate referrals as directed by the supervising physician. 13. Performs endotracheal intubation with successful completion of ACLS. 14. Administers, monitors or maintains local anesthesia as a component of one’s own procedure or in assisting supervising physician. 15. Writes prescriptions for medications and other treatment under the authority of the supervising physician (if PA has a valid DEA and CTP or CTP-E). QUALIFICATIONS 1. Requires a master’s degree in a PA program or higher to practice as a certified PA. 2. Must be a graduate of a CAHEA (AMA’s Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation. 3. Must be nationally certified by the national Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 4. BCLS certification is required. 5. Current CPR certification, or obtain within 30 days of hire. 6. Must possess excellent communication skills. PATIENT CENTERED CARE & BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS 1. Promotes Patient and Employee Safety • Demonstrates safe Patient Handling (i.e. transfers, transport, care administration, nutrition, medication, etc.) • Demonstrates safe Materials Handling (i.e. appropriate use and disposal of chemicals, infectious wastes, etc.) • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of Infectious Disease precautions and use of proper protective equipment • Demonstrates Slips/Trips and Falls Awareness. • Actively contributes to maintaining a safe, clean and quiet environment.
